Default Lexus Brake Pad Marks

Hey everyone first time new member here and wanted to ask a question regarding rear brake pads on 2019 ES350.

My rear brakes are needing of replacement so I bought a set of Lexus/Toyota brand brakes. I noticed the brake pads in the box have 2 pads with a single dash mark and 2 pads with a double dash mark. Does anybody really know exactly why they are marked like that? The all look exactly the same but I assume they are inner and outer pads but not 100% sure.

Trying to avoid taking the old ones out and not being able to see anything visually to see due to wear or weather.

You’re always going to have to double check fitment when you disassemble. Even OEM pads will change over time and won’t necessarily look the same as the replacements.

Youre going to have to look to see which are the inboard pads and which are outboard. I used to do brake jobs on our cars but gave that up some years ago.

It sounds weird what you said. Are you sure you got the right parts? Just take 1 pair on your car out to check I mean won't take few minutes, unless it is complete worn out you wills see all marks...

What is your trim so we can help with correct part number, also search for part numbers and check pictures, eBuy, Amazon and other websited often show the real product pictures.

For example my Kentucky made 19 ES350 Fsport use part # 044660E070 as rear brake pad
This is what it looks like: google search images

Further more, since ES is front wheel drive, front brake pad tends to looks bigger...

It only takes a few minutes if you already have your car in the air, supported, your tools out and ready, the cap off your brake fluid reservoir and the level is sufficiently low or you take some out so it doesn’t spill when you retract the piston, you’ve already used brake parts cleaner, you’ve already removed the wheel and you already have the new parts ready by the car.

Assuming of course you’ve done it before enough times that you don’t have to watch a video first. Then yeah, it only takes a few minutes to take off your brake pads!

You missing the part since this is rear you have to deal with e-parking brake, have to follow the procedure to put it on mainatainace mode to retract the piston LOL

Well he bought the parts to DYI so I assume he can just spend few mins to find out, maybe can just take a sneak peak at the side of the pad without taking it off and have a better idea.

Yes. Those are the pads I bought as per the image P/N 04466-0E070 from the dealer. My car is the F sport trim so everybody knows.

The only thing is the image does not show the top part of the pads that has the marks. It is on the top curve side of the pad if anybody remembers changing genuine Lexus / Toyota pads.

The only reason I am asking this question from the beginning is I did see a YouTube video weeks ago where a master Lexus tech from Canada on his YouTube channel explains the reason why those marks are for. If I remember inner and outer pads I believe. The only problem I can not find the video anymore which I think I did find it but it is private now.

Just taking a shot if anybody on this forum is a Lexus or Toyota tech or anybody knows the answer.

The pad thickness to me look exactly the same in the box. But the guy did explain a reason for the marks.

post pictures if you can, maybe I can remember I did mine last year front and rear I don’t recall any marks, everything goes in as it should you can’t even mix up because it will not fit, or maybe someone will know.

These are the marks I am referring to.
Two pads have a single dash while the other two have a double dash.

Pads with one mark go inside, with 2 marks go outside.

One MARK means one pressing point (piston). The outer pad has 2 pressing points (caliper).

Also, when you remove the caliper, you will be able to see the marks on the old pads.

If you install them wrong, turns out you can take the appropriate color sharpie and draw the needed lines back onto the pads.

yup I took 1 old pad out at the time and find the exact match from the new parts and match them then set aside and move on

The Youtube channel the OP talking about was Viktor G Automotive where he posted all Lexus service jobs from dealership followed exactly as in toyota/lexus service bulletins. That was probably why his channel got hit and been down, really really a gem!!!

I have been subscribed to Viktor for a long time, probably more than a year. I know where he works, which dealership but don't know him personally. He used to do videos inside the dealership which I knew he'd get in trouble soon enough. Then he did lots of videos in what I believe is his home garage. He even uploaded in the last few days. Now I see he has zero videos on his channel. IDK I think Lexus corporate probably stepped in because he wore the Lexus outfit in his videos.

There's a reason every mechanic who does videos inside the shop gets in trouble. I followed a Canadian Hyundai tech that covered some battery issues with EVs etc and he got shut down fast too. I *love* the insider look at the service side with no BS, no drama.
