Cruising Range 0 — Three gallons left??
Crew,
Tried searching but couldn’t find ES-specific responses. Feel free to redirect me if something’s out there.
As I was heading into the office today, my cruising range was getting low. Ended up noticing that I could get to costco with just a few miles left on the range. Dash indicator was on the E line. Cruising range at 1 mile. I go to fill up, lo and behold it only takes 14.26 gallons... on a 17.2 gallon tank...
What the heck is going on there? Three gallons left but showing 1 mile left on cruising range??

It's to save you from yourself. All cars have reserve amount of gas in the tank to prevent people from running out of gas more often.

certainly makes sense... but man, I feel like it’s usually only a gallon or so. Normal on this car to be three gallons? I could go a lot of places with that much left!!

I also understand that the gas cools the fuel pump as they are typically in the tank nowadays. The argument is you don’t want to let the fuel get too low or the pump will get too hot. Just what I heard and I cannot verify the statement, but it may explain why the manufacturer wants you to refuel before it gets too low.

yeah it took me awhile to get used to that 2.5 to 3 gallon reserve on the ES. but quite frankly I like it. Usually not an issue for us... we have a standing rule in our cars... once i'm down to 1/4 tank, time to fill er up.

Another reason is the fuel runs to the low side of the tank depending on the slope of of the road you are on. Even if there is a gallon or two left in the tank the pump may not be able to pick it up.

I have a 2014 ES. I just got back from a road trip today. I had 56 miles to go according to Navi and at least three gallons of gas since the light hadn't come on yet. I'd been getting an average of 30 MPG or more, so I figured I could make it home on fumes--I thought I'd try. The Cruising Range showed 26 miles. I know I can do more and have in the past. It counts down slowly, not exactly every mile. Anyway, not more than five minutes later the low-fuel light came on. Well, I decide better safe than sorry and pulled over to fill up--there just happened to be a Shell right there. So I fill up 13.9 gallons. The tank is 17 gals if I recall. So that means the light comes on at about 3 gallons left. With an easy 25 MPG and probably 30 MPG, I could have made the 56 miles. That's today's story.
However, you never know if you'll hit traffic jams or whatever, so when the light comes on you really should be looking to get gas, if not before. Speaking of MPG, over the last four years of playing around, I have concluded that the ECO setting will save an average of just about 1 MPG overall...at least that's what I've been able to figure out.
