Low fuel warning light came on, gauge was approx. between E and 1/4, drove another 10 miles and then filled tank. Gas pump read 14.1 gallons, gauge was slightly above full . Was there 5 gallons remaining when this light came on, thought tank held 19+ gallons?????

 

My 2013 Owner's Manual says the fuel tank capacity is 17.0 gallons.

Have they increased it since then?

 

The fuel tank capacity for the ES is 17.0 gallons. I believe that it has been the same size for all Generation 6 model years.

It appears that the light comes on when there are still 3 gallons left. The Acura's I used to drive had the same generosity. When my light comes on I immediately go to the "cruising range" segment of the display for monitoring. You can probably go another 40-50 miles depending on type of road, driving style, etc...

 

Has anyone accidentally "tested" the cruising range displayed?

Is strikes me as a great way to run out of gasoline.

If you run the injectors dry in a Lexus, do you have major problems restarting? (some vehicles do)

 

I have gone about 20 miles after the range indicated 0. Still had a little over a gallon in the tank.

 

That's too close for me, even living in the Great Northeastern Megalopolis.

If I lived elsewhere I doubt I'd routinely go below half.

 

I always fill up when gauge shows 1/4 tankful. Why wait until last minute? We live in a big country. Never ran out of gas in my life so far. I always thought people running out of gas should be ticketed for negligence, LOL!

Not at all, but they can be damned far apart.

 

Also always there is a chance. There could be some water at the bottom of tank. If one drives on strange unknown road, better not take chance. I use to carry a 5 Gal. fuel can just to be sure when I used to roam with our fifth wheel during family holidays.

 

I always reset the Trip Meter after I fill up. Then I always know how many miles I've driven. The Cruising Range on the ES is nice but a) isn't always visible, and b) isn't “true".

In the city I easily get 300 miles and then fill up. I can probably go 350 without much difficulty. I think the low-fuel light comes on around 320 but I still have a good 50 miles of city driving remaining before things get worrisome.

On road trips I easily get 400 miles and then look to fill up. I have gone 450 miles no problem but after that I start to get a little worried. I think at 450 I still had a gallon or so in the tank.

Bottom line is when the light comes on, you better be looking for a gas station. In town you can go home and fill up tomorrow on your way to work. On the road, you better start looking if you haven't made plans to stop already.

In conclusion, I fill up in the city when I reach 300 miles or so and I fill up on the road shortly after reaching 400 miles.

 

Remember Boy scout motto? "Be prepared" Nothing wrong with that, LOL! In Germany if one runs out of gas on Auto bahn driver gets ticket.... One can't walk on the side of the road either on Auto bahn.

 

Not saying you should always go below 0 range on a regular basis, but it's good to know that there's a bit more in reserve if needed.

If I filled up at half, I'd be at the gas station every few days.
