Default Connecting Android phone via USB question

I have an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S4) and store my music on the SD card of the phone. When I plug the phone into the USB connection of my ES309h, it does not recognize the phone as a storage device. I have the phone set correctly.

USB stick works great. Any ideas on how to get the S4 to connect? I know I can do it via bluetooth, but was trying for the USB option.

Why are you against using Bluetooth?

I think the issue with it not working via USB, is that the car doesn't have any drivers for the phone.

I am not familiar with Samsung per se, but you may need to set the phone to act as a usb storage device. This will also keep it from being able to receive/make phone calls or operate any of the compatible BT features of the phone though.

Setting a phone to act as a storage device will not disable those features. However, I still believe it would need a driver to recognize the device.

I also have a Galaxy S4, and, if there is a way to connect the phone to the vehicle via USB (except to use the USB connection as a charger for the phone) I haven't figured out how to do so. On the other hand, when the BlueTooth on the phone is enabled, communication between the ES and the phone via BT is plug-and-play.

You'll need drivers. But why even bother?

Can't you just buy this for $60:
Amazon.com: Kingston Digital 128GB DataTraveler 101 G2 USB 2.0 Drive - White (DT101G2/128GB): Computers & Accessories Amazon.com: Kingston Digital 128GB DataTraveler 101 G2 USB 2.0 Drive - White (DT101G2/128GB): Computers & Accessories

It's 128gb, more than enough to carry most people's entire MP3 library with you. And no iTunes crap to mess with, just drag and drop.

I have a similar flash drive, same size, and it works great. The only issue is with the limitation on the number of files it recognizes. I have about 1,000 albums loaded on it and the car only sees 800 and something. Probably not an issue for most people, though.

I like these.

Small with virtually zero chance of something to snag or knock it around while plugged in.

Does other music content on the phone work through the USB ie., Pandora/iHeartRadio?

No, it works via Bluetooth. There would be no benefit to using USB, even if it did.

Is there a workaround? Maybe that limitation is PER FOLDER?

Depending on the file system, there might also be a limitation on the total number of characters in the file path.

I try to keep my folder names as terse as possible.

That is actually very nice and compact! I'm going to buy one and give away my existing one to a family member. Thanks!

BTW, how's the write speed on it?

I have the 64GB version of this drive and it is very nice in the center console not to have anything sticking up very high. All I remember is that it is a standard USB2 device. I don't have the packaging anymore but you could probably go to the Kingston website and get more technical specs there if you really need them. It isn't a slow device and didn't seem to take any longer to copy over all my mp3 files over to it than it did to put them all on the external hard drive I keep them archived on.

The usb port will only provide power to your android phone with no playback. The usb port will play music from a stick drive. You can also play music via the mp3 port, but the blue tooth is much better because the ff and rew buttons on the steering wheel are able to control the phone. The usb port is however able to control and playback an IPOD.Not sure if it will control an I-phone.
