The front right tire on 2013 ES 350 (less than 2000 miles) met up with 3 nasty roofing nails.
MY mechanic says new tire, my contractor says it can be patched. I am a female who travels alone.
Thoughts?
Also, any great tire vendors in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area?

Just be happy it is not a "runflat tire" that in most cases cannot be patched. I've had many tires patched over the years without a single incident of subsequent blowout. My impression is that as long as the nails are in the tread area (not sidewall) it can be saved. I'd suggest any competent tire specialist; in SoCal we have the Discount Tire chain, perhaps Costco?

OTOH, if you have serious doubts about the viability of a repaired tire and the financial impact is negligible, replace the tire for peace of mind.

 

I think that you already know the answer. If this contractor is the one responsible for the errant nails that entered your tire, well that speaks for itself. Under the circumstances I would most definitely replace the tire. If you don't you'll be constantly worried that it will fail - at the most inopportune time. Not to mention the safety issue. Get a new tire...

 

If it was just one nail in the tread I'd say fix it. But three nails you might want to replace. I've had several repairs done over the years and never had a problem, but they were single nail incidents.

 

While I hate them, in the past, I've never had an issue with a properly patched tire.

If the contractor is responsible for the damage he should replace the tire with the brand and model of tire. If you repair use Discount Tire. I believe they're known as America's Tire in the LA Area.

Normally a nail in the tread area can be patched with no issues. However, the issue in this case is really not the nail in the tire as you did not just happen to run over a nail. The negligence of the contractor is what caused the problem and you should be restored to where you were before his negligence. To do that, requires that he provide a new tire.

 

Agreed. One nail in the tread area should be okay. With three, I'd replace it for peace of mind, especially if it's the contractor's fault.

 

how close are the nail holes? the inside patches are about 3" round rubber disks and can't overlap

tire balance will be off a bit at high speeds, too.

tell the contractor Lexus recommends them being replaced as a set! LOL.

its just a negotiation...

Contractor doesn't want to buy 1 tire, but he might be happy to buy 1, when he might have to buy 2...

I tend to raise the stakes when they are in my favor
