Default Range estimate doesn't accord with mileage

Setting up the new-to-me 2015 ES350 has been a set of rabbit holes but successful, with one exception: the range estimate is grossly incorrect. The 'after filling' number, with half a tank to go, is 27.3 mpg. The range estimate is 160 miles, where it should be in excess of 200. Is there a means of re-setting this or starting fresh?

I didn't know about the trip odo when I did the only fill-up so far and neither did the previous owner: they were both the same number and about fifteen miles less than the legal odo.

This sure isn't a show-stopper, it's mainly curiosity.

Notoriously incorrect on the safe side. Just a quirk you have to live with.

Two things with the range estimate. First, it is based on your last usage. For example, if you do a lot of city driving and fill up, it will say 250 or 300 or whatever. Then go on a road trip and fill up. The estimated range will be 350 or 400. So that's that.

Second, I have played extensively with this on road trips. I have 2014 ES 350/UL and have gone 450 miles at 70 MPH average over distance (I-35 mostly). After 400, the miles-to-go starts to get conservative. For example, at 400 it will say 40-50 miles to go. Now, I usually fill up because you never know what lies ahead. But playing with it, even when it says 20 miles to go, you can squeak out 40 if you are conservative in your driving. As st1800 said, it is a conservative estimate. With a tank of 17 gallons, at avg 30 MPH highway, that's 510 miles.

Given a road trip of stop 'n go, small towns on U.S. highways, say an MPG of 28, still gives 17 * 28 = 478 MPG. So 450 is within range if you have to. On road trips I fill up at 350-400 if things are going fine (I know where I'm at and when I'll find the next gas station) and fill up at 300 for my normal in-city driving (since there is a gas station always around the corner).

Hope that helps!

OK, thanks. My last car (Subaru Legacy GT 2005 5mt) gave shockingly accurate range estimates as did my Renault Clio, so this perverse behavior blind-sided me. Now I understand that this will self-correct given a few fill-ups. Knowledge I appreciate.
