Default TPMS trigger

I just had picked up a nail in my tire causing a slow leak. I have had an occasional TPMS light which would go out but I attributed that to a low battery that I have in one tire. 2 days ago the light came on and stayed on . I went around all tires with my TPMS tester and found the right rear lower then the other 4 tires. I pulled the wheel and found a small (looks like a sheet rock nail) in the tire. The air pressure in this tire was 24 lbs. Based on this it appears that the trigger for setting off the TPMS is about 5 lbs. Just an FYI

When you replace the sensors should you replace the spare as well?
IF not getting new tires is there a best method for doing this yourself?

Thanks

I recommend getting Techstream software cuz it gives you a good overview of all the sensor data such as air pressure, battery level, and threshold amounts. The only slightly annoying thing is having to figure out which sensor is in which wheel.
Then once you know which batteries are running low, you can just replace those sensors with Denso units from RockAuto. You would need a mechanic to peel off the tire off the rim and screw in the replacement sensor for you and possibly rebalance the tire.

This is a good video on how to troubleshoot and replace the sensor.

The other two options would be:
1. Use the Autel maxiTPMS scanner and Autel sensors to check each wheel and clone the sensor IDs
1. Pay a mechanic to diagnose and replace the sensors for you

I Did not realize that a Special scanner is need to diagnose the TPMS ! Would the standard OBD II scanner do the job instead of Autel maxiTPMS ??
Thanks for the Help, EJ Dossary, EE

Dear jagtoes, Thank you for you response to this T{MS light issue ! After getting the Tire alarm, I also went around with my tire gauge and found one tire low as yours, 25lbs. The Spare was also very low. I fill this with air to the specified pressure of 35 Pounds. I am hoping that I will be as lucky as you and have the Alarm disappear in time !! Otherwise, I will replace the sensors next time the tires are replaced. Our car is 2012 and I think it time for the batteries and/pr sensors to be replaced. Commentary, There is no need to monitor Tire Pressure at all times. Added electronics is just another failure do dear with !!
Thanks Again, EJ Dossary, EE.

Subsequent to my issues with the tire alarm on my dashboard, I made an appointment at Sam's Club tire repair. They check for senor failure and found two front tires had bad sensor for a price of $43.00 each. They replaced them and checked the status on my dashboard. The alarm turned off and my car still running without any tire Alarms!! Thank you Sam's Club. Best Wishes to all, EJ Dossary, EE
