sorry i missed posting an intermediate update
i went back to the indy shop yesterday
he opened the hood, fired up the car and said that he guarantees it is the water pump and will be responsible for all repairs thereafter if it is not
so how much is reasonable for this job at a good indy?
their labor is $115/hr

how many hours labor is wp replacement?
Took me seven hours but that included about an hour driving around town looking for bearings to replace those in the tensioner pulley;also replaced the thermostat. If I had to do it again, I can probably get it done in half the time.

OK the sure way to find out is call the dealer and ask. Also if the indy is positive it's the WP he should have given you an estimate to repair/replace it. All service places have a service guide that gives estimated times for all repairs. This WP is about 4 hours of labor and depending on whether you buy aftermarket or OEM parts the price goes up. Next is replacing the idler pulleys should be done along with a new belt. My bet is you should see somewhere between $600-$800 for the job.
