Default Keep it or try and sell? High mileage owners please chime in.

Hello all,

I've got a 2010 Lexus ES 350 with 120,000 miles on the clock. I purchased this car new back in 2010. This vehicle has been my daily driver for the past 6.5 years. Being my first luxury car, I've gotta say that I will stick with Lexus if I decide to get another luxury vehicle. I've taken care of a lot of the engine/brakes maintenance on my own, and I might sound biased here, but all the things I've done on it were done meticulously and carefully. No leaks from the engine yet and oil and coolant levels are consistent between changes. Crazy to say, but it drives and rides just as I remember the day I drove it off the lot. I've also taken very good care of the parchment interior, and dare I say, it still looks pretty new inside. Exterior is in good shape as well. I use Zaino and detail it when time permits. It has had a a clear bra on it since new and I'd say it was a good investment as there are virtually no rock chips on the hood. Lexus paint is good too, they deserve credit there. Bottom line, it's been pampered and well taken care of.

With that said, I would like to gather opinions on whether this is a good time to pick up another car, or keep the ES. I know some major service items are going to start creeping up (spark plugs, transmission fluid, water pump and hoses , checking timing chain guides, alternator, shocks, differential fluid - just the few things that I'm anticipating which should be addressed proactively). Not to mention the nav. It scares me to think that if that goes out, will control of the AC go out as well? I have a young child and want to have a reliable car. I do still have confidence in the ES, but I also know nothing lasts forever. Good values for this year and mileage on NADA indicate about 11k.

I might not be fortunate enough to purchase new this time around (due to now having a child and purchasing a home). I definitely want to try and find another ES 350 CPO with around 20k miles. What year has yet to be determined depending on pricing. With all that said, would you keep the ES and address all the maintenance (with the intention of tackling those within my means), or start shopping for something newer with lesser miles? Please advise.

Thank you, all!

Are there any new features you're looking in your next car? If not, I would stick with your current car especially if you are looking at a used car. You know your current car's history etc. whereas a new-to-you used one, not so much.

Lol, I'm in the same dilemma. I have 09 es 350 with 126k that I bought it used last December. It was a one owner car with complete maintenance records. I've put 16k since I bought it, 0 issues (as far as the wearable items, I replaced tires, front brakes&rotors, cabin air filter in past 2 months). In fact, tires could have lasted another 4k-5k, brakes were at 50 percent but I had a little little vibration on the steering wheel and decided to replace front brakes&rotors. No dashboard rattling, no damage whatsoever. It runs so smooth

However, I would like one with touchscreen, Bluetooth (audio), and lane assist feature. Are they mandatory?Of course not, but something is pushing me into the newer model. CPOs are expensive though (I'm refusing to pay over KBB (private party) very good price on any cars I buy, regardless if it is a dealer or private party transaction). There are really good incentives on new 2016 es350. You would probably get a better deal with that.

Wife drives our Lexus and I maintain it.

Here is car's maintenance record; I'm missing 1:st tire change and the front O2 sensors; also replaced #6 ignition coil about 10K miles ago.

105000 01/10/13 ATF flush; 894 reverse light mod
117910 02/20/13 Spark plugs NGK Iridium; AF
118500 03/02/13 KYC radiator; belt
132000 10/26/13 Brake pads; OEM turned rotors
133050 11/16/13 CSF radiator; coolant flush
138217 02/26/14 VVTi Oil lines replaced
154000 11/09/14 Nankang tires
155050 11/02/15 Alternator (Oreillys); Idler pulleys; coolant (radiator only); belt
157800 02/27/15 ATF flush (Valvoline MaxLife); ATF filter
173000 12/19/15 Front brake rotors/pads-Maxbrakes; Front brake kit-ACDelco
173800 01/10/16 Thermostat and coolant flush
174100 01/16/16 Rear engine torque strut mount
178970 04/27/16 Alternator replacement under warranty
180450 05/21/16 AC Delco Rotors
182400 07/04/16 Brake fluid flush
182700 07/09/16 Pass brake caliper (Autozone)
184291 08/10/16 installed resurfaced Max rotors
184845 08/20/16 Pass side lower BJ (Moog) and pass wheel bearing & hub (Dura kit)

Notice, still on OEM water pump and OEM rear brakes/rotors. Wife has complained of a funny noise at times on startup when starter is cranking. I have not heard the funny noise but looks like a new starter is imminent - looks very easy to replace.

She still drives great. Oh, I did recharge AC around 130K and she still blows very cold air.

Plan on keeping her another 3 years and wife is looking at a Grand Cherokee for next car.

Clean but gap was a bit wider than specs. I believe maintenance schedule calls for 120K, but I would change them at 100K, and check them at 30K and every 20K thereafter for fouling and re-gapping.

You haven't had any window troubles yet? Maybe they were fixed before you got the car...

Anyway, I say keep the 2010. That's a great car and it's fairly new.

I drive a 2006 Acura TL with 125,000 miles and I plan to take it to about 200k before getting rid of it. I have a 3 year old boy and I have no concern about the car's reliability. My wife drives a 2006 Honda Pilot...same thing there.

Everyone's risk tolerance is different but I'd say you have a good safe reliable car on your hands.

Don't jinx me! We are original owners and the windows are 'holding' up.

Aah sorry man. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I'm sure it doesn't actually happen to all of them...of course we won't really know until they all start getting close to 150k-200k miles.

Why do people still think that a car with 120K is high mileage? its not a Ford Pinto...its a Lexus...most reliable brand out there. im not sure what some people think.120k is nothing depending on the care given to the car. I just bought a 2010 with 121K on the clock but the last 50k were put on in the last five months. car is still more like 90K car. ive buffed it out and it looks brand new at the moment. crazy that I got it for $8K and with a little elbow grease it looks like a 20K ride

Mine is at over 200K now... Not planning to change it any time soon

Btw, RAV4 we have, features the same 2GR engine, is also at 200K+ and we're not planning on replacing it soon either... Will reevaluate this stance it at 300K...

Ours has gone over 220K. In the last 40K, I replaced the passenger side CV shaft to address a vibration. I also replaced the water pump as preventive maintenance. That was a PIA and took about six hours but I'm glad I did it as the bearing had a bit of play. We sold the car to my daughter's BF but I will help him maintain it. Within two months, the coil in cyl #4 went out - easy replacement; the car has had three coils go out. Engine and tranny are still running smoothly, and BF says he loves the ride.

High mileage - 120K ??

My legend blew a second head gasket at 220K. I wish the engineers didn't put that flaw in; the car was quite a looker.

Child costs vs monthly car payment --- I'd put my money in the child costs. Get better car later on.

Enjoy
