Hi, My ES350 steering shakes when I break on freeway.
This situation actually happened awhile ago when my wife told me(her car), My first reaction is she break too hard and the ABS kicked in cause some abnormal behavior reaction by the car.
I also call the lexus dealer for advise. They did say it probably is the ABS.
But, I found out yesterday, When my wife was driving and I sit on the side and she break the car not very hard and I can see her hand on the steering shakes. I don't think this is normal.
When the car on the local street I can't feel the same situation or because on the freeway it magnified the problem under higher speed.
Is this the break system problem or the ABS needs a fine tuning? Are the front wheels needs balance?
I hope the thread can direct me to a right direction.
thanks
the car is 08, and has about 20+ miles.
It still has the original break pads.
thanks very much, I did have a tire replaced about a year ago and after I read your post. I googled and found an article mentioned sometimes after a tire replacement and new tire is not properly installed, this shaking problem can happen. I just hope the rotor is not too damaged over the year period, if this is the cause.
If you can't or don't know how to check the rotor for run out then take it to a dealer and have them check. It's pretty simple and should take no more then a 1/2 hr. Also do we assume that you had the front end aligned after the tie rod replacement.

If your tire is not properly installed (i.e. balanced), you'll get the shakes usually while in motion. If you're only getting your shaking when braking, it's more likely to be a warped rotor.
Bring your car to the dealership and they'll resurface the rotor for you. They will do it for you under warranty.
I think Toyota is gradually lack of commitment of building quality cars after so many years of great runs. You just look at Camry. It almost a copy cat of ES350. Toyota seems lost the grip.
This kind of problem should not happen so often on Lexus. I am loosing confidence on them gradually.
no man. car is too good..
this is somethnig which occurs normally
get ur rotors turned and u will be fine....
there is a seperate thread.. DONT COMPARE CAMRY WITH LEXUS ES350.
there are a LOT of difference.. top of line camry 26-28K.. base lexus 37-38K. the 10K extra is not for the label.. it is worth it..
can someone post that thread. which has a pic where u cud see. toyota manufactured in tenessee.. and lexus in japan and workers had white gloves.. tolerances /specs of lexus is much more than toyota.
thanks very much everyone on the thread.
You guys are super.
It is the warped rotor cause the shaking on the steering wheel at high speed driving(60 and above.)
The dealership resurface the rotor and install brand new pads for the front wheels of no charge.
All works done under Lexus's warranty.(luckily still in warranty)
Hope this fix will last a lot longer than just 15k+ driving.
PS. I do think this warped rotor fail should not happen under normal driving condition. It is such a frequent used part(break) in the car and it is very easily been correct problem(by making the rotor thicker?) so...for Lexus, it is not acceptable. Because I am holding Lexus at a higher standard just jkutti2000 said white glove, tolerances/specs etc.
I have had the exact same problem for years on our 2004 RX330. It is a rotor problem and apparently there is a defect in some rotors. I had the rotors turned twice under warranty. My next Lexus will be getting aftermarket cross-drilled rotors.
thanks very much everyone on the thread.

It can hardly be blamed on Lexus. So many shops bang away with the impact gun, not paying attention to the pattern or torque of the lug nuts. This will absolutely cause warping. Some of those impact guns can be at 150lbs with just a very short blip on the trigger. Folks, the factory torque spec. is only 76lbs. Whenever you have a shop remove your wheels for any reason, always ask politely to have them hand torqued. I don't let an impact touch my car, ever.

It has nothing to do with impact guns. I am telling you that Toyota has been using lighter rotors for some time. I own three including the Lexus. I have had constant rotor warping. Expect the Lexus to do the same. By the way, had an Infinitii and a Maxima without this issue. The solution is to get heavier after market rotors or keep getting them turned down until they have to be replaced.

Jimbo most tire installers and dealers use a torque socket on their guns. Sometime you will see the installer put a color coded socket in with the tire order. They are usually the torque spec for the car the tires are going on. The socket will stop turning at the spec torque and the socket shaft will twist telling the operator to stop the gun. Now if you go to some back yard mechanic who just cranks up the impact gun then you have tight nuts. I find it hard to believe that to tight lug nuts will cause rotor warpage.
I went and had the rear brakes done on my 07 and I was told there was a bulletin on the brake pads, in regards to them warping the rotors. They apparently use different pads now. Right at $280 for the rears.
