Default buying 2010 ES - Dealer holdback issue

Putnum Lexus in Redwood City had a 2010 White gray for 33.9k

But I wanted red tan so he quoted 1500 extra or 35.4k to get the car from a dealer in Oxnard or Bakersfield CA.

I put down a 1k deposit for the car and the car is now up here at the Putnum dealer ready for pick up.

I read on the internet that to ship a car from LA-San Francisco costs $400.
So the cost should be 34.3k

If the car is in stock then the dealer Putnum Lexus can be pass on the following savings to the buyer (me)
703 Dealer holdback
351 Finance reserve

So when Putnum Lexus gets a car from someone else they lose that 703+351, so they can't go less than 35.4k

does this make sense?

what would you do if you were me?

Marin Lexus says they can get a Silver Gray for 34k OTD which is a color I also like. I might end up losing my $1k deposit with Putnum Lexus though?

But I don't want to stiff the dealer either. I want to do the right thing and get the best deal.

Usually the dealer sends a shuttler to exchange cars from one dealer to another. Paperwork shuffle with Lexus corporate.

So are these real costs for getting a car from another dealer?

or just a sales pitch to jack up the price?

$703 Dealer holdback
$351 Finance reserve
$1058 total

Pretty sad that they are charging you anything in this economy, you actually want to buy a new car. I would say forget it and look at another dealer.

The dealer has to pay the other dealer holdback to trade for the car, but the other dealer pays them holdback also IF they trade....so ask the dealer if they are trading for the car. if they are, then the dealer is paying them hb for the car they require in return...if they are not then you must realize losing your deposit makes no sense in light of the fact that you are paying that extra to get the car you want no matter what you do.

I remember talking about getting the some of the holdback on our '07. The salesman was so aghast you would have thought I just stole his wallet. With Lexus dealerships, they are insulted. With American car dealers, part of the game.

I think Lexus is walking the fine line between "discounting" versus maintaining the "premium/luxury" branding. As Diogenes said previously, just explore the pricing at other dealers. If you have the time to 'wait it out', then they'll each play off of each other to get your business. Every business is hungry in this economy. I remember buying our first Lexus back in 1998 or so... the dealer back then said "we don't really discount" (yeah, right...b/c they eventually did of course). Same dealer now in 2010..."SALE" displays, reduced prices put on cars, etc.

Again, if not pressed for timing of when you need the car...just let the dealers bid down the price...that will end up being the "market price" at the end of the day.

I ending up buying the 2010 es for 34.5k from Putnum Lexus Redwood city CA
they did get me the color car I wanted from Bakersfield which is about 300 miles away. I could have got it for 33.9 in a white gray or some other, to me, less desirable color.

Today was my first day of use, and it really is a great car!!!
