Default Overboosted steering

Is there any cure for the overboosted steering in these? I understand it's a luxury cruiser not a sport sedan but are there any options to dial back the boost?

My car is a 2000.

Nope! You can put the rack in from a Solara it geared for a more sporty feel.

I hadn't thought of that but I suspect Solara parts are the same since when I looked for Solara steering rack online all the results indicate they also fit the ES and Camry so they probably have the same gearing so no net difference.

I don't recall if there were any Solara models that offered "sport" oriented trims so there might be something I'm not seeing.

Hello,

The amount of force you are being provided by the power steering system is directly proportional to the amount of flow that the pump is capable of producing, so to decrease the boost, you will need a way to somehow decrease the amount of flow provided by the pump, it implies either increasing the size of a PS pump pulley, or finding a new flow control valve for one of those cars, something like this for GM pumps.

With that, there are drawbacks - first, I am not sure how safe it is to do, or whether it is even viable in the first place, especially in a car like that, it will require a lot of custom work done to the system. The most important issue, however, is that I doubt that stiffening the steering in this car will make it any more controllable or give you a sportier feel, if not worse, it will only make it harder to turn the wheel, not like in BMW with harder, but more precise feel. Those cars were designed with different purpose in mind, so if you are looking for a car for winding roads, this is probably not a particularly good pick..

Hope this helps and best of luck!

I've driven the Solara it does have a quicker ratio. Replacements are the same since parts makers don't want to bother making a rack specific to the Solara.
