I’m not an automobile mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but it appears from my reading on the subject... Your column switch is first choice, OR your connector is disconnecting and needs cleaning and reseating (not so much). They don’t look outside of my skill level and removing the steering column outer shell looks fairly easy.

If you search “xxxx Lexus cruise control problems” (xxxx is your year), most responses are other clublexus discussions here on the subject and are full of excellent info.

There is a cruise control module on the left side of your engine compartment and I’ve read that an associated connector is worth inspecting/cleaning with some electrical cleaner.

Like I said, I’m not a mechanic but I do scrub the Internet for info and this picture is what I found. I’m glad to report the picture came from a clublexus discussion here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ol-module.html

Stumbled on this thread. My cruise has always worked perfectly until this morning otw to work. It was kind of intermittent. It would set then let go for no reason. I would reset it and then it would hold then let go again after a few seconds. I turned it off and on a couple of times then it seemed to behave itself the rest of the way to work. Any ideas?? Thanks

This is still happening periodically. This morning it worked fine. Yesterday morning it would not work at all. I would set it and if would disengage after only a second or two. I thought it had something to do with the shifter not making proper contact the keep the gear shift position indicator light on. But maybe that is not related. Any ideas? Thanks

It happened again this morning on the way to work. It seems to have something to do with the shifter. I moved the shifter from the D4 position where it always is to the left which downshifted the car, then I put it back. The cruise seemed to behave itself after that. Is there something in the shifter assembly that would cause the cruise to cut off? Maybe just a dirty contact on something? Thanks

Hello,

I remember that in 3rd-gen ES, it was still possible to short Pins Tc and E1 in the Diagnostics Connector under the Hood and see the Cruise Control Fault Codes, the issue is that I am pretty sure they got rid of this system with the introduction of CAN Bus for a 4th-gen, which is unfortunately what you have, and unlike the 3rd-gen, there is no longer a Separate Unit that controlled the Throttle, the Cruise Control uses the same systems that the rest of the Engine, any fault there will manifest itself somewhere else as well.

To diagnose this issue in your car, it seems like you will need a Techstream Cable, then you will be able to connect to the Cruise Control ECU and see what Fault Codes it has, or run Active Tests that will trigger Fault Codes if there aren't any already. Seeing that majority of the Cruise Control system relies on other, crucial parts of the Engine, like ECU, Throttle Body, etc, there aren't that many issues that can cause Cruise Control to disengage without causing any other Driveability concerns, making it that much harder to diagnose.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

2002

If a malfunction occurs in the vehicle speed sensors or actuator, etc. during cruise control driving, the ECU actuates AUTO CANCEL of the cruise control and turns on and off the CRUISE MAIN indicator light to inform the driver of a malfunction. At the same time, the malfunction is stored in memory as a diagnostic trouble code.

Output of DTC using diagnosis check wire.
(1) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(2) Using SST, connect terminals Tc and CG of DLC3 (pin #4 & #13).
SST 09843−18020
(3) Read the DTC on the CRUISE MAIN indicator light.
Normal light blinking duration - every 1/4 second
DTC code blinking sequence - every 1/2 second (count total blinks for first digit of code), followed by 1.5 second pause, followed by, every 1/2 second (count total blinks for second digit of code), followed by 2.5 second of no blinking )end of code
example code 52 - 5 blinks, followed by 1.5 pause then 2 blinks followed by 2.5 second pause
16 PIN connector

It seems to have something to do with the shifter. There is a gear position indicator light on the dash. There are times that light is flickering or out completely. If I giggle the shifter the light comes on solid and the cruise seems to behave itself better. Is there some kind of switch in the shifter assembly? Seems like something just has a dirty contact maybe.
