Default Nav system update

2017 ES300H. A new highway extension opened near me a month or two after I got the car. The nav system does not recognize the new road. The dealer tells me that updates are available 2-3 times a year and carries a $300 fee. That sound right?

The updated Navigation data is published every autumn, Oct/Nov. time frame. While they are available all year
round it would be a waste to spend the couple hundred dollars in Sept because it would be so close to being replaced.
You would do well to ask to see the Nav in a 2018 ES and check out your highway before springing for the new one.
Your MY 2017 ES will have the 2016 map data, the 2018 will have the 2017 published stuff.

If you do decide to update your maps sometime, check the dealers web site for Service Specials. Sometimes you can save a few dollars on a special or with coupon. Not a huge amount but you can save a few bucks.

I suspect that he is talking about a system update, which is available on the Lexus Drivers' website, and not a map update. The map updates are not the same thing as the system updates, and I doubt that a free map update would be offered after the purchase of the car unless it was a part of some sort of good will offer made as the result of botched service or something else that the dealer did wrong.

Lesz is correct. There is a FREE "system" update. When I connect my phone to the car (2014 ES) and go to the Lexus Apps menu, Lexus will connect to my car and check for "system" updates and download/install them through my phone (data charges may apply, see store for details, does not void warranty, service contract not...LOL!)

Anyway, I prefer using the Navigation on the Lexus for convenience. Yes, it gets out of date. I've decided to update every two or three years. When I got my 2014 I had the 2013 maps, so I upgraded in Nov. 2016 (it's best to update in Nov. since the updates come out in Oct.) with the then-latest version for my ES (each year is different). Cost me $170 MSRP.

IMPORTANT: It appears the website http://www.lexusnavigation.com/what-to-order/ is malware-infested and wants you to download an updated Flash player--which is probably infected (you should only download Adobe Flash updates from Adobe website!) DO NOT GO TO THIS WEBSITE.
