Ask the service manager...how many cars did he see in the past week that came in for coolant temperature gauge...because according to his statement, every Lexus should have a high coolant temperature reading when its hot outside.

Well stated dchar. The car simply shouldn't have run hot PERIOD!

You mean someone drove your new car a whole hour with the engine coolant temperature gauge was almost touching the red line? If true, the motor is damaged. There's absolutely no excuse for that and the dealer should be forced to buy back the car if a dealership employee drove the car a whole hour to your home with the coolant temp near or in the red zone.

anyway, in 2 weeks when you take the car back to the dealer let us know was the problem, that is if the head gasket is not blown by that time.. LOL. Oh maybe you should check the engine oil dipstick to see if there is coolant mixed with the oil.

Worst case scenario, any overheating episodes should have been recorded by the ECU. The dealer can pull up the data to see if the car really did get close to overheating. Gonna be hell to pay if someone at the dealer cooked the engine by not noticing the high engine temp...

Find another dealer ASAP. I live in south Florida and I have never seen the gauge climb out of the normal state. Also, is it a lease or purchase? If it's a lease and you don't intend to buy it, then it is ultimately their problem when they try and re-sell with a blown out motor in the service history.

I have to agree with most of the others.. no way that your temp gauge should approaching the red line. I noted that you said you live in California and it was over a 100 degree's on that day.. I live in Louisiana and it is absolutely normal for temperatures to be in the upper 90's and triple digits all summer long and I have never seen my temp gauge on my ES show anything but being in the normal range... The only thing I would check before having it towed to a dealership is I would check the coolant.. Just make sure the engine is cold when you do it... if the coolant level is okay, just have it towed to a lexus dealership... Good luck with it and let us know what happens..
