It is on. But it has been on for a while before the trac light came on.

Well, that's no good. Get the codes read and report back.

Check engine lights are there for a reason.

Most likely you'll have to deal with that O2 sensor before you'll get that TRAC light off.

Traction control sometimes disables when a CEL comes on because the computer is saying, "Hey, I got a problem and will likely not provide reliable traction control."

P0136 is the
code which is not the easiest one to get to.
You'll need to lift the car up to get to the sensor.
And probably need to remove the passenger seat to disconnect the wiring harness.
Part is about $50, you'll be better off fencing over good money for the Denso (OE) part.

That sounds like fun. Will driving it like this cause any damage?

It's possible it might cause damage (but in my opinion not hugely likely. I'd drive it nicely)best to get onto it and solve the problem. O2's aren't expensive or hard to fix.

Unhappy Traction control and Check Engine sign on

I own a 2001 Lexus ES300 and my traction control and check engine lights are on. I have also had problems with my transmission if I drive on the highway for a extended period of time. Once I slow down to under 30 mph, the transmission will occasionally not shift into 4 gear (or overdrive) unless I turn off and on my car. Also there
is a slight rattling noise (similar to rocks in a can sound) in the engine area when I'm accelerating around 1500-1900 RPMs. I have tried changing to a higher grade fuel but that didn't help. I also replaced the gas cap with one from Walmart and again no solution. This car has never left me on the side of the road I just don't know how to fix her and wanted to see if anyone else was having similar problems.

Fix the bank one sensor two oxygen sensor and it will probably clear your trac off button and your check engine light. This sensor is located on the exhaust underneath the driver's seat. The wires come into the passenger compartment under the driver's seat. You can pull the carpet back or cut through the carpet. I just cut through the carpet because it is under the driver's seat. No one can see the cut. It's a pretty easy job. There is a DIY around somewhere.

Driving with this error is unlikely to cause any damage but you won't have traction control. Also it could cause your catalytic converter to go bad over time.

Get your error codes read. Buy an OBDII reader or some auto parts stores will read it for free. Without the error codes it's very difficult to give a accurate appraisal.

Damaging your expensive Catalytic converter becomes a real possibility. Address the problem ASAP.

I would like to order the 02 sensor from amazon but not sure i have the right one. The one i am looking at says

Denso 234-4622 Oxygen Sensor

and that it will fit my car. Does anyone know if this is the correct one.

Can't answer this without knowing the model year of your ES. Go to this link. http://densoautoparts.com/find-my-pa...icle-selection the bank 1, sensor 2, O2 sensor for which you are looking is usually described as " rear, downstream". Buy the OE style. If you buy the universal style you have to reuse the connector which requires cutting and then soldering the wires.
