I replaced the right rear hub a couple of months ago. About a week ago I got ABS error codes 11 and 33. Replaced the right rear sensor. Worked for a couple of days, then the speedometer stopped working and got a P0500. Replaced the VSS. Took it out for a test drive everything seemed to be working good. About 5 minutes into the test drive got the MIL and the ABS error lights and speedometer not working, possibly when I went over a speed bump . Same codes. After checking codes and clearing MIL, all error lights were off. Took it for another test drive, when I went over the speed bump got the ABS light.

When I replaced the right rear sensor, it looked dirty on the contacts. It looked like that could have been the problem initially.

I'm going to pull the hub and take a look. Any common causes of these codes? Could a bad hub be causing all these problems? Any thoughts?

 

Looks like the hub is the problem. The ABS tone ring separated from the spindle and must have been spinning freely. This hub is Raybestos 712009A Professional Grade Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly. (I'm getting a refund.) I've ordered a replacement, a Timken. I'll update once I install it.

 

Just wanted to post an update. Since I replaced the hub about 10 days ago, I haven't received any errors and the speedometer is working correctly.

 

You're saying the speedometer gets its input from the rear ABS tone ring? I don't think so!! Coincidence I believe.

 

I did not say anything about from where the speedometer gets its input. I only presented the symptoms of the problem so anyone in the future who has the same problem with the same symptoms can see how I solved my problem.

But since you brought it up, I think it's likely the ECU, through some algorithm, compares all the input speeds from all speed sources. Then if the speeds comparisons are completely out of wack, based on whatever parameters are programmed into the ECU, the ECU turns off the speedometer and sets MIL P0500 because the ECU cannot determine (through its algorithm) the correct speed based on the inputs. Of course this is just speculation because I'm not privy to any detailed information on the inner programming of the ECU.

Let me give you something else to ponder. Why is ABS 11 code set when the problem is the right rear tone ring? You'd think the only ABS code that would occur would be 33. The ECU is programmed to set ABS 11 and ABS 33 based on the inputs it received. The ECU doesn't think. It just follows its programming. The reason the ECU sets both ABS codes is that its programming and inputs are not sophisticated enough to determine the cause or source of the problem.

Yes, it may just be a coincidence that the speedometer started working after I replaced the hub. There is no way to know unless the old hub is put back in. I'm not doing that because I'm too lazy. I also don't have the old hub anymore. I sent it back for a refund.

Because there is no way to know for sure why the speedometer stopped working and is now working after I replaced the hub, we are back to where we were before you brought this up.

When the hub failed it probably had less than 1000 miles on it. I'm sure it was defective from the factory. The car is a 1999 ES300.
