Is it just me or everyone else is the same?

Charging the phone via USB port is slow as fudge and is useless!

I find that the same thing is true. If I use the DC port, the phone charges very quickly, and, when fully charged, it will hold at 100%. Similarly, if I use the DC ports on my GX, the phone charges quickly. But, with the USB ports on the ES, charging is done very, very slowly. If the phone is powered down, it will slowly gain a bit of charge during a driving trip, but, if the phone is powered up, it might actually lose some of its charge during a driving trip, depending on what apps are in use.

Your phone must be less of a power hog than mine because, if I use the GPS on my phone and if the phone is plugged into the USB port, it will still lose charge fairly quickly. As I said in the post above, if the phone is plugged into the DC port, it will be okay.

USB port charging is slow because usb data port by design can only supply 0.5A of power at most (USB3.0 can provide 0.9A). If you check the charger your phone comes with, it usually provide anywhere between 1 to 2.5amp. Typically, phones with bigger screen has bigger battery which draws more power. USB data port charging has nothing to do with the car, and has everything to do with USB standard.
