Older LiftMaster garage door program problems

Older LiftMaster garage door program problems
This is not a "homelink", in that the remotes are smart.
Typically, I just press the main button on the garage door motor, then press the button in the vehicle and voila it is programmed.
No luck on my 2008 ES350. I've erased the ES codes by holding buttons 1 & 3 for 20 seconds until I get the acknowledgment flash back from the vehicle,
Has anyone had luck programming their ES with an older LiftMaster+ without homelink?
Help! I've read everything on this forum and have not found a reference to the older remotes.
