I decided to take my es 300 for a Maaco job. Their presidential package includes: Acrylic Enamel, machine sanding most chips & scratches & full cost of primer sealer, Ultraviolet Suncreen, & an Oven Baked Finish.


I want to know:

1) I see that people advise to do prep work yourself beforehand. What exactly does that mean/entail?

2) Should I ask for anything specifically in terms of quality paint, or number of coats etc.? I'm pretty clueless.

WIth Maaco paint job you get what you pay for. If you get $300 special it will fail within a month or so (basically to make it look good so that you can sell it real quick)
A $1000 paint job should last you several years. I would definitely get urethane base/clear if you can afford it.
Prepping means sanding out any little scratches, fixing dings and dents, do any necessary bodywork and sanding entire car for paint job which might involve removing emblems, windshield washer nozzles, removing door lock *****, etc. etc.

 

You definitely won't be happy with a maaco paint job if you plan on keeping the car! Waste of money. I only use maaco when I'm trying to sell a car quick and it has to have paint. My own personal vehicle, NO WAY!!

 

maaco is not bad for quick paint jobs but its true that you get what you pay for. The cheapest paint jobs are single stage paint jobs. Ive seen them last for a while (more than a 5-10 years with good maintenance and paint protection) but you have limited colors to choose from. I've had one car done by maaco almost 10 years ago and i was happy with the outcome for the price.

Prepping is a good idea because depending on what package you get, they do absolutely NO PREPPING WHAT SO EVER. You got old paint flaking, they will paint right over it
