I brought my 96 ES300 into a local shop for emissions testing. My car did not pass. They had determined that the transmission will eventually fail because of a sensor that is telling the transmission to do something it shouldn't do. This was a couple of months ago and I haven't driven the car since.. I can't recall the details if these 2 are related.

The vehicle inspection report identified the following codes:

P0401: EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION FLOW INSUFFICIENT DETECTED
P1705: MANUFACTURER CONTROLLED TRANSMISSION

They say I will eventually require a new transmission. Would anyone have any input on this type of issue?

Try clearing the codes and see if the transmission code comes back...

This may just be electrical. There is a switch on top of the transmission that is attached to the shift linkage and it indicates to the ECM which gear is selected. There is also a sensor on top that indicates to the ECM the rpm of the direct clutch pack. If the sensor is bad it can make the ECM think that more than one gear is selected, or indicate improper transmission speed for the selected gear. CEL may or may not be set for this, however this will affect the EGR code and is not necessarily an EGR fault. If you have an app called TORQUE for your Android you can watch the engine load and see it operate erratically.

I hope this little bit of wisdom helps you out.

P.S. When clearing codes it is necessary to complete drive cycles before you can re-test. (I know this because I am from Southern California)
