Default Nav map scrolling question

My question with the Navigation is how can I scroll the map forward? Frequently I want to scroll the map forward. For example, when I get close to a destination, whether or not I am using the system for directions I sometimes scroll the map forward to see how many blocks before I get to a particular street, or the name of a street or two before I get where I need to make a turn, or sometimes just to see on the map approximately how far I have to go. I may do this if I know the general area, but may not remember the specific street location. I cannot figure out how to do this on this Nav system. As an alternative, I try to zoom out, but the streets and their names disappear from the screen. I have the same issue when I try to scroll ahead for traffic incidents. What am I not doing, or doing wrong?

I'm sorry but I don't understand the question.
As you zoom out, the map gets smaller thus the names are excluded to avoid confusion; imagine you zoomed all the way out to fit the city and the names are there you will see nothing but white text.
If you remember the general area (i.e it's between Smith St. and Jones Rd.), you could do what you did except zooming out to the point where street names are excluded. I think only major street names will be shown once you pass 0.5.

You can use the mouse pointer and select an area in the direction you're travelling. That will recenter the display to the selected spot. To go back, just hit the map button again. At least that's what I remember working.

You can also click and pull the map forward, back or sideways. Just like your computer.

Thanks a lot. I will try those ideas. I am so used to my MDX and just push the interface dial in whatever direction I want the map to move, so that is what I have been trying. I was afraid that this was a feature that was frozen when the car is in motion.

I hear you on this. It is just annoying to keep pressure up then enter everytime. Why can't the map navigation just simply go up/down left right when you move it and have a button to cancel.

A button or Voice Command to cancel the Nav would have been nice too.

Well, it sorta has a button, but it is a click or two away from the initial nav screen. First select route on the bottom of the nav screen, then on the next screen select delete for the destination. That will cancel navigation. I know its a bit more than just a single button to cancel nav, but it can be done.

I usually leave the trip info on for the instantanious fuel consumption. So I need to click menu, destination, route, cancel. 4 clicks later, eh....

Arty, I drove the ES some this weekend and while I can advance the map via a click to re-center, I could not click and drag the map around as with a computer. What am I doing wrong?

Not doing anything wrong. That's how it works.

Move the cursor and click.

Won't click and drag.

I have found you jut click at the side of the map and the screen scrolls over in that direction. if you hold the button down, the map continues to scroll in that direction.

Mine won't continue to scroll if you hold the mouse down.

Only to the edge and then it centers and stops.

It will only move beyond the display with the cursor on the edge and button held down, and when the car is stopped. It's one of those things the Nav won't let you do while moving.

Yep, when stopped.

Plus, you don't have to be on the edge.

I can put it anywhere and leave it held down and it turns yellow and scrolls.

I can make it go up/down/at an angle.
