With winter rapidly approaching, I decided to get an aftermarket remote start. Apparently the factory remote leaves much to be desired - page after page of complaint posts. I inquired about a Viper two-way remote. The two-way sends a signal back to the FOB to confirm that the engine has been started. Now here's the kicker: According to the installer, who was recommended by Viper, Toyota is the only manufacturer where the engine shuts down when the door is opened. So the Viper remote is actually the same as the Lexus remote. Additionally, one must carry a second remote FOB. The plus side, according to the Viper dealer, is the extended distance possible with the Viper remote. $500.00 installed. I don't know what Lexus gets for a factory installed remote. The price at my dealer is $499.00 + installation and at Sewell it's $399.00 + installation.

Doesn't the Viper have a smart phone app? No need to carry a second FOB, plus, you can start it anywhere that has cell service.

Nice idea but I don't carry a smartphone. I'd need the extra FOB.
