Smile Sensors

I have an ES 300 2002 Lexus. Have the check engine light on. Plug the computer into it. Shows Bank 1 sensor 1 error.
How can I locate where this sensor is on the engine

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is near the firewall. Bank 2 Sensor 1 is near the radiator.

I just replaced that sensor this past week on our 94 ES. It now has 165,000 miles on it, and this was the first sensor that we have had to replace.

This sensor is not easy to access. The space between the engine and firewall is small. I could not manage to get two hands into the space. This made unclipping the old sensor connection and reclipping the new one somewhat awkward.

Rock Auto has the Denso sensors for about $55.00. The Lexus and Toyota dealers that sell on the internet had the sensors priced at about $150.00. I don't know if the OEM sensors are Denso; however, many Toyota OEM parts are made by Denso.

The "universal" sensors are cheaper if you want to go through the hassle of clipping and reconnecting wires.

You must be careful with the sensors on Toyota products -- most are not regular 02 sensors. Maybe the previous poster's 94 was a simple 02 -- in any even he is before full OB2 in 1996. The sensors are also air fuel ratio sensors -- a regular sensor will not work.

Also don't use universal sensors -- especially after MY96-- the price difference is not worth the problems.

You can get an exact fix for you car -- the rear sensor is a pain - I had my mechanic change that one.

The 94 ES is OBDII. There is a code reader plug-in just to the right of the under dash fuses.

After the check engine light came on, I used a code reader to determine the problem. The code was 135, which is the code for the bank 1, sensor 1 oxygen sensor problem.

The sensor I got from Rock Auto was exact fit.

CUMan -- I understand.

I lot of things changed in those years and II was not formally adopted until 1996MY

Toyota uses different sensors than most manufactures on the later cars - they are A/F ratio sensors. So you can not use a generic O2 sensor. Some don't understand the difference and in an attempt to save some $$ order the wrong part.

If you order the exact fit for the car you will be good to go as it will be an A/F sensor.

Thanks for the replies. This was the first time I used this forum and I had trouble working it. I brought the car to my friend who works for Lexus and he told me Bank 1 sensor 1 is by the firewall and a little difficult to replace.
