"Air/Fuel ratio sensor circuit response malfunction (bank 1 sensor 1)"

i am thinking about buying the O2 sensor for $170 and replacing it myself, instead of paying the mechanic $60 for labor.
I have no idea where it is and if i can replace it without having an access underneath the car.
any suggestions, tips, and exact location of the sensor is highly appreciated. thx

 

Ok, two things I've found recently as my bank 1 sensor 1 is out also:

The best way to see exactly where that sensor is is to climb a bit into the bay from the drivers side, looking behind the engine, against the firewall towards the passenger side. You'll see the O2 sensor sticking out with it's attached cable. Yes, it appears to be a pain in the butt to get to.

And you can get the sensor from amazon for an amazing $70.

And according to AutoZone, this is the model number of the proper O2 sensor (before the cat).

 

the price on amazon.com is kinda awesome and looks as any other o2 sensor. I have a California emissions es300 1998, is there any difference in o2 sensor types?

You can add your vehicle and then see parts just for it. In my case, for a 95 ES300, this is the part (the Denso version) that came up:

I would perhaps start by entering your vehicle on AutoZone or Amazon even and seeing what O2 sensors they offer but I was surprised to find it that cheap on Amazon. Your mileage may vary.

For what it's worth, I ordered one off of Amazon just now and it should be here on Tuesday. I'll report in on how the change went with pics and such.

 

Be VERY VERY careful here. My '98 was also a Cali-spec car, technically you don't have O2 sensors, you have "Air/Fuel Ratio" sensors. They are slightly different. I had to replace both of them on my car, I bought them both from Toyota (I used a VIN from a Camry).

It's a pain to reach the rear one. You will need a special socket, and short stubby extension, and a set of ramps to drive the car up on. I reached it from underneath. I don't remember the torque for installing the new one, I gave away my FSM to a buddy.

 

Go to the Denso website for aftermarket parts for a 98 ES300 you get the following:

I believe the front left is the one you need. Denso Air Fuel Ratio Sensorpart number 234-9007. Also the difference between the too is the length of the wire to the connector. Also Denso is the O.E. Manufacturer.

I put this part in my 99 ES300. It was pretty easy. The hardest part was un-connecting the wiring because of the limited space for you hands. You will also need a O2 sensor socket. I tried using a wrench but there was a bolt in the way that prevented me from turning the sensor. I have some of the same codes on my 1998 ES 300. I had the guy at Autozone read the codes for me.

P0171 Bank 1 too lean x4
P1130 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) x 3
P1135 Air/Fuel sensor heater malfunction
P1150 Air/Fuel (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P1153 Air/Fuel (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

These are for the O2 sensors. I think that is causing the following codes:

P0300 Random Multiple Misfire
P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire
P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire

So my questions are:

1.) I want to replace BOTH sensors. The one on Bank 1 and the one for Bank 2. Are they different part numbers? Like does Bank 2 have a longer pigtail than Bank 1, or vice-versa? DENSO part number 234-4622.

2.) Is this a good place to purchase from? THMotorsports

3.) How can I tell if my car is a California specification?

4.) What will go wrong if i use the non-California part in a California specified 1998 ES 300? What about the other way around?

5.) I read somewhere that the engines in this generation are bad because of some oil sludge build up problem. Is this true? What is the best way to remove the oil sludge?

Look under your hood for a sticker to determine if it is Cal.

I buy mine from Amazon because I'm a Prime member and get two day shipping.

According to Denso for non Cal the same part number 234-4622 is used for each bank. For the Cal, I believe the sensors are the same but the difference is in the length of the wires. You can buy universal sensors and reuse your connectors. Too much trouble for me.

No good way to clean up sludge. However doing frequent oil changes with full synthetic oil (Mobile one for example) will clean the engine over time. Some people recommend Sea Foam. I have no experience with it.

What will it say if it is a California specification car?

Where is it exactly located under the hood?


UPDATE: I just looked under the hood everywhere. There are NO stickers except one on each side wall with the VIN.

UPDATE 2: I found out by reading Amazon reviews of the California specified sensor that you can determine if it is a California specification car by reading the VIN number. The fifth letter of the VIN will be "F" if it is a federal specification, and NOT a California one.

 

I think the 5th letter of the VIN is specific to the model year, make, and model. Why don't you just call a dealer with your VIN. They should be able to tell you.

Got the sensors and it turns out that the car has California emissions. Not the federal emissions specification!

NOTE: There is NO STICKER under the hood. So the best way to find out what emissions standard you have is to look at the connectors on the front oxygen sensor and compare to Bosch website.

I found out when I tried to connect the wire. It has the wrong notches.

So to find out if you have the California or Federal emissions, look at the Denso site, it shows the notches, and then compare to your connector in the car.

Returning both to Amazon and getting the correct ones: Denso 234-9007 and 234-9009

 

1995 Lexus ES300 3.0 bank 1 sensor 1 the air fuel ratio sensor I need the pinout diagram for the connectors female and male the connectors got burnt up and I'm replacing them I need to know the schematic on The wire the color and position somebody give me the diagram for it please

 

You should be able to look at the one on the front of the engine (bank 2). The plugs and wiring will be the same on both banks.
