Yes, it's a tape deck. Back in the 80s they were very popular in cars.

Back in the day it was like - "Oh man, your tape deck has auto-reverse? And Dolby noise reduction? Sweeet!!"

Good times, good times. What a improvement over 8 track tapes!

Lexus had cassette players in their cars as recently as 2006 - LS430 for sure.

You can use it for that I suppose, but the car has a regular headphone jack as an aux input anyway. A USB port was added for 2010 for iPods, but any MP3 player can still use the 1/8" jack.

According to this, it was an "option" all the way through 2009.
You want it - Lexus has it!

Can you post a picture of the center stack?
I think many people would like to take a look at this oddity.

Red face cassette deck

My 2009 has it and I was told that many people in the wealthy set like to listen to audio books and that is why the cassette deck. I guess if you are rich you don't have time to read a book. I sure don't know! Maybe some rich people can confirm this.

One of the reasons for the tape deck availability may have been due to the relatively high average age of ES350 buyers.

Many of them probably had/have a lot of cassettes and wanted something to play them on without having to convert to CD's or any other format.

Nah -- how are we supposed to get our fill of Quarterflash and ABBA without it?
