Default 96 es 300 starting issues

ok, my 96 es 300 is having starting issues and they are vary random. the battery is fairly new, and so is the alternator. i can drive for short or long periods of time and the car may start up just fine, sometimes it will act like its trying really hard to start, and sometimes i will have to have it jumped. this has been going on for about a week now. granted it is like 100 plus degrees right now, but i wouldn't figure that it would effect the battery that much. i had the alternator and battery checked to day and they both tested good. but an hour after that i had to have a jump. when it doesn't start the engine doesn't crank, there is just a ticking sound under the hood. as soon as someone hooks jumper cables up then i can pretty much just touch the key and it starts just fine. im at a loss guys. any ideas or advise?

Next time it happens, and before getting a boost, try to wiggle the Battery Cable clamps, and see if it makes a difference. They may be loose.

Has the car ever died on you while you're driving?

Is this problem random or only when you leave the car off for an extended period of time?

I am not sure on a 96 but my 93 has two parts cable clamps, disassemble all the connections to the battery, clean everything make sure the hardware is tight, and lastly make sure the connections from the battery to the starter are clean and tight....and yes temperature has everything to do with battery performance, and the same holds true for your alternator....both drop off significantly under higher temps.....

Try making sure the plug to the alternator is plugged in all the way. Mine was loose and gave me the same symptoms that you described.
