Default Quoting me 2k for STRUTS. Common problem?

Have a pinging noise coming from front passenger side wheel. Brought it in and they tell me the struts need to be replaced. Fronts and rear. Almost 2k when said and done.

This seems high to me. Anyone know of this problem and if I could buy some struts on my own. Easy or hard to install? I know a mechanic and will ask him if he does them.

Any knowledge would be great. Thanks.

What year is your car? Do you have the adjustable suspension?

THis is what they have listed....it's a 2001

Front Gas charged Strut 2 @ 179.99 a piece
Front Strut Mount 2 @ 155.99 a piece

labor for this $270.00

$70 to align

Pretty much the same cost for the rear...a bit less.

Is this hard to do or can a decent mechanic get it done right?

Thanks

the price for the parts are a little expensive considering kyb-gr2 can be bought for a little over $300 for all four. kyb strut mounts can be bought for 70 a peice, you can probably find an even cheaper price if you look around.

so 2k for struts is OUTRAGEOUS!!

Thumbs down

Back in March of '07 I posted up my complete suspension overhaul. With completely quality aftermarket upgraded parts it was ~$1400.

Start your research on available 3rd gen suspension vendors, parts and prices and go elsewhere!

So you're buying them online and are you installing them yourself or have someone else do it?

I bought it all online and had a local shop install it. (Ref. $350 labor in breakdown above)

definitely buy KYB GR2, I just had them installed on my car with Tein S-tech springs and the ride is fab-u-lous. Plus they were a bargain over OEM pricing.

If I get the struts and springs you recommend, can I have an auto shop put them on for me or will they want to only put on the struts that they order?

And if I do get them to put on the struts I buy then they won't warranty any of the work.

Do I need to put SPRINGS on as well, or is this just something that I COULD DO?

THANKS!!!!!

I got another quote and they were at 1k for everything, but I still think I can do better.

springs typically do not need replacing unless you want a different stance. There is a manufacturers warranty for the struts if you buy kybs.

If i did kyb struts wth stock springs would there be a noticable difference in handling? and also, what would i have to do about the sway bars, leave them be?
