Unhappy Heating up!

@#*! My engine keeps heating up....the only thing that keeps it from overheating is having the heater on full blast. I was hoping it was just the thermostat, but I just had that replaced and yet the problem persists. Help me out guys, should I have the radiator replaced or first get a diagnostic done as it could possibly something else? Right when I thought it was safe to finally lower the damn thing!

Have you replaced the thermostat?!? If you have and the same problem is occuring, it could be a few things. First get the pressure check of your radiator system to see if you have any leaks or any blockage in the system. Second it could be the the temp switch which controls the fan. This part is located on the bottom of the radiator and kicks the fan on and off. Third did you hear and funny sounds before the car started to over heat( like a week to a few weeks prior) If you did it could be the water pump. Those are the only things that i can think of that are related to the over heat problem. I could be wrong , but keep the forum updated as to what the problem is .

Hope it helps.

I just reread the post and you said that you replaced the thermostat. The thermostat could be defective and also I asume that you put the thermostat in the proper way. I believe that the thermostat has a small pin hole that should be positioned the proper way. I will get the diagram for you .

Does the engine overheat while driving or just when it's idling? If it only happens when the engine is idling it could be either the temp switch, as SemiConTech pointed out, or the fan motor itself.

Best of luck,

John

Hey guys, thanks for replying to my post. I read some of the possibilities that you guys suggested may be the problem. To answer Jgrooms, the car only approaches the red when driven @ freeway speeds and even then it only happens after about 10 minutes of driving. But the needle at the most only goes to the 3/4 mark when the heater is on high and never touches the red. It doesn't overheat when idling. The thermostat I guess could be defective as SemiConTech suggested but it was installed professionally and the part was brand new so I don't know what the chances of that are. So far every mechanic tells me it's the radiator. $320 is the best quote I've recieved so far.
