I don't think they stand for anything, just prefix that use to distinguish differences among models.

LS---Luxury Sedan

Welcome to ClubLexus, Fairwinds! Lexus model names have been a topic of speculation, and the following list is mostly apocrypal; however a number (IS, GS) have been sourced, in part, by official literature:

LS = Luxury Sedan
GS = Grand Sport
ES = Executive Sedan
IS = Intelligent Sport

SC = Sports Coupe

LX = Luxury SUV
GX = Grand SUV
RX = Recreational SUV

There have been a number of suggestions in particular for ES and RX as well, as stated here and elsewhere. Executive sedan works from the sense of referring to the executive size/category of cars in Europe/UK.

Enigma got it right on the money, except for the IS. During my visit to Taste of Lexus, which was prior to opening to the public and given for Lexus employees, there was a facilitator who gave us a run down of the abbreviations while introducing us to the models; IS stands for Individual Sedan and GS stands for Grand Sedan. Which would make sense because there are no other segments for the IS to fit in.

For the SUV's, the X stands for Cross-terrain.

I was pretty intrigued after he told me all that because I never knew what most of the abbreviations stood for either.

Haha, they don't mean anything. And even if they did then the secret lies with Lexus. I just make it up anyway. I always thought of:

ES - Executive Sedan
GS - Grand Sedan
LS - Luxury Sedan
SC - Sport Coupe

Real creative aren't I?
