Default Code P0765 - Transmission problem?

Hi All,

I'm a new member and did try to use Search function but didn't get much answer to the problem with my 1999 ES300 w/ 159K mikes. All a sudden my car didn't seem to shift properly (won't upshift to 4 I think). Also CEL and TRAC light went on right after that. I managed to retrieved the error code P0765 - Shift Solenoid D Malfunction. Would someone please help me on how to test this shift solenoid to see if it's really malfuntion? First please point out the location of this solenoid (schematic or picture would be great). I'm mechanical inclined but need some guidance. Thank you in advance.

Regards,
-Dung

I've had this problem before in my '01 ES, and from my experience, it could potentially be difficult to just replace the shift solenoid D and conclude that the transmission is entirely fixed. There is a good possibility that the tranny might not function properly. In any case, I suggest going to a Toyota or Lexus dealership and inquire about getting just that solenoid replaced and see what happens. Worse comes to worse, you may have to get the entire tranny replaced with a remanufactured one. Good luck.
