Default a CLOTH lexus

Lexus's new ES has standard cloth read the pressrelease quote below... WOW. thats not right, at least to me

Lexus' craftsmanship and renowned attention to detail provide true luxury by design. Dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-way power front seats, with available memory, highlight the front cabin. The supportive standard cloth seats are also available in leather and extra-soft upgraded perforated leather for additional comfort.

BTW I am loving the new ES the roof is amazing and the center console looks much better tan what was first posted

Default cloth to leather

I think that Lexus will at the end decide to make leather standard as they did with the new IS. If you remember, the new IS originally was supposed to have cloth seats standard but when it came time to announce pricing they also made leather and sunroof standard.

Cool

It's not the first time cloth has been in the official lineup. For that matter even up until rescently you could pay the dealer to swap out the seats to cloth, tho it hasn't ben an official option in over a decade.

This is a case, I believe, of 'standard options'...nearly all the ES 350's sold will have the leather 'option' package. It's kinda strange, but even the 1989 LS 400 had a cloth option but it was supposedly really hard to find (I've seen 1 or 2 since then).

But really, the 'option' leather 'package' artificially makes the MSRP low, when in fact for 95%+ of ES purchases, the MSRP really is the stated cost INCLUDING leather.

Default Cloth Seats

I'm sure that 99%+ of the cars sold will have leather. The cloth seats may be an option to satisfy the PETA crowd who want a car without leather interior.

Not in Canada, cloth is still the standard for the base model IS250, with leather as option, & with the current exchange rate, it's more expensive than the base IS250 in the US too . . .

but that makes lexus resemble toyota when it is a luxury sedan. Luxury is defined with leather. not cloth

The models that you will see at your local dealership will more than likely have leather. Lexus and the Regional staff will probably equip it that way.

Actually a lady that lives on my block has a cloth interior ES330. Its very interesting but looks so out of place. Unfortunately it might kill her resale.

I got to sit in a 03 ES with cloth when shopping this past September for an ES. It was 102 outside that day and I nearly jumped at the opportunity to buy the ES with cloth since it was soooo much cooler inside the car than the other leather models that I had tested and looked at during the afternoon. The quality of the cloth was really first rate. It was actually much softer to the touch than any leather that Lexus currently uses. If I lived in a climate that had a long winter (Canada) also I would like cloth instead as it would not be so cold to sit on. I did not get the 03 cloth model though because it was previously owned by a smoker. If you smoke in a car with cloth getting the smell out must be tough. Even after a treatment by the dealer when set out in the sun all you could smell were the cigs....
