Question

Just bought a used 97 ES and it did not come with the remote keyless entry fobs. Lexus dealer wants $160.00 a piece. Needless to say I did not buy them from Lexus. Does anyone know where I can get a hold of some or buy compatible after market.

On ebay. Buyer Beware though... pick a seller with good feedback!

A Toyota dealer can probably sell you the part for less than what the Lexus dealer charges. Still, consider yourself lucky; had your car come with the combination key/remote/transponder unit (on newer Lexus models), you'd be looking at about $300!

Default Key fobs

Hillee,

is it a CPO, or was it private? I can give you a contact in Manhattan that might be able to do better on the price, let me know via PM.

Thanks guys for the tips...I found two of them on Ebay for $20.00 each. I had them reprogrammed at dealer and they work great! Just make sure the FCC number on the back is the proper match for the year and make of the car. They cost a half hour labor each to reprogram but still a bargan over the dealer full price.

Hilee:

Could you elaborate more on your making remote key fob? I'm facing the same issue with my 96'. I found a guy on the Internet who happens to have a key of the kind. It's an integrated rey-fob operated remote control fob with a button on the side. Is this the kind the one you had? He is willing to sell it for $25 plus shipping. Is that reasonable? How should I handle the Lexus dealeship in order to avoid overspending?

Also, you reprogrammed the fob, but how about the key itself? Did they recut the key too?

Your input will be appreciated, either here or to aushako@hotmail.com

Thanks

The '96 ES uses a different key/remote setup than the one on the '97. The '96 uses a combination key/remote unit with the button on the side. The '97 uses a remote separate from the key. This newer remote has additional functions: trunk open and panic.

The guy on the internet will sell you a the combo key/remote for your '96, however the key is a blank in addition to be unprogrammed. The Lexus dealer will have to laser-cut the key and then program it.
