check light problem

Default check light problem

hello

i have a 1995 lexus es 300

i been gettin the engine check light for couple dayz now,

i drove the car for awhile and the light went away, but came on again today.
i went to autozone
they read the code for me




i got PO401 code

what does that mean, how much is this going to cost fix, is this a major problem
or i can fix it myself,

i think p0401 is an upstream O2 sensor...but im not sure...

P0401 is insufficient EGR flow. You can probably resolve your issue by cleaning the EGR valve. I don't know the ES at all, but maybe you can search for instructions on how to do this. Here is the link to the trouble code page:

That calls for the replacement of the EGR Modulation Valve. It's the circular apparatus with the vacuum hoses right next to the EGR that needs replacement. It's a Denso part that you can get a Toyota parts counter. I've had the exact same problem with my 95 Avalon in the past. You shouldn't pay more than $100 for the part. You can pretty much do the install yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

Here's a pic from my old 95 Avalon. You should have the exact same engine bay setup other than the radiator (Denso USA made).
