I'm trying to get to underneath the shifter but i dont know how to do it. 98 ES3. any body know how??

 

Get a flathead and carefully pry out the around the edge of the wood shifter trim, starting with the 2 back corners. I suggest wrapping the end of the flathead with some electrical tape so that you don't risk cracking the trim piece.
