2007 ES 3650 176K miles, cold engine idle (850-900 rpm) I hear a tick tic probably coming from the valve system. If I bring it up to around 1krpm, it is quiet. OK, not a big deal but I hear it. I am thinking that the pump runs faster at higher rpm so the ticking stops. Am I correct about the pump? I use 10W30 oil, should I go to 20W30? It gets down to the low 60s here in the winter nights. Don't laugh at me! Can I try something to clean the pump or just turn up the radio?

I think the oil is the problem here. 10W30 is too thick for this engine when cold so go lower, try with 0w30.

 

Search for lifter tick and see if it fits the description of what you hear.

 

5w30 is the recommended oil type IIRC.

Not sure why you are using 10w30.

 

ok jkayca, I'll go back to 5W30 next change, (Christmas) . I don't know what 0wt is, it is not possible to have 0 viscosity. Thanks Ed
