Lightbulb Dash Lighting

Hi,

I have 93 Lexus ES 300. I need to replace the bulbs in the instrument cluster (speedometer, tachometer). Can anyone provide me with the part number for bulbs which I can use to make it more whiter and brighter like the newer models. At present it appears yellow even with full intensity.

smasood, welcome to CL. I tried before looking into upgrading the instrumental lighting when I had my '96 ES, but I was informed by the Lexus parts dept that no "white" bulbs from, say a '97+ ES, would fit into the instrument gauge cluster of a '92-'96 ES (reason: different sockets). However, one of our forum administrators (aka O. L. T.) specializes in modifying Lexus instrument gauge clusters, mostly for SCs but I'm pretty sure he can also work on ES's. You could PM him and gather more info on this topic. I'm interested in hearing the results

Good luck.

just because you asked...

ES needles can be fired yellow (waterfall), amber (SMD), or red. (SMD). They are limited to that due to their brown tinted face.

Backlighting is #24 bulbs from any auto store. it will still appear "less than white" because no lamp burns white. very light colored blue caps can make it appear much more white however. Noone has ever found any THAT light in color. the cluster always ends up blue.

Default Hid (High Intensity Diode) direct bulb replacement

Hi,

I have found a website which sales Hid (High Intensity Diode) direct bulb replacement for backlighting of instrumetn panel the available bulb sizes are 194. 168 or 161. I just want to know if Hid (High Intensity Diode) direct bulb replacement can replace the regular bulb behind the gauge cluster and is there an adverse effect related to Hid (High Intensity Diode) direct bulb replacement.

Any comments or suggestions.

I took a peek at the website selling those HID gauge bulbs you speak of, and it mentions that they look "intense" on white gauges. I'm guessing they look ideal on such gauges in cars like the Acura TL or Honda Civic. Since all of the gauges in the Lexus ES sedans have a black background, the bulbs probably won't look any "better" than direct OEM replacement of the bulbs. Just my $.02.
