Hello everyone. I'm trying to replace CV axle, and while I'm doing it. I decide to replace the seal. I made a mistake by not taking photos of seal before remove. How the axle suppose to be? Flush or all the way in. I dont want to do the job 2 times.Thank you everyone
That seal looks to be made possibly by National? Toyota seal usually looks like this
If that is not a Toyota part then flush with the casing doesn't mean much, having said that you tapped in the seal until it bottomed out by the looks. Next time don't touch the seal they never go bad unless damaged when removing the axle.
CHECK to make sure the spring is still inside the seal it's easy for it to pop out of place when hammering in the seal.
That's the OEM i buy from dealer. Maybe because of the angle when i took the photos. I replaced the seal because I'm looking for some axle videos, and they said seal is cheap, you should replace when you there. Tbh I should leave the old one like you said. Just learned something new everytime i work on this car
hi @LeX2K . I replaced the axle but the noise still there. I think traction control when tires off the ground and noise I mentioned are two different story. Right now i'm focused on the noise. My balljoint rubber is in bad shape. I saw some grease leaking, but there is no movement when i grab the wheel. I'm thinking about the strut mount. I replaced struts 30k miles ago. I use KYB Strut Plus. Today when i tight the strut mount nut. The nut rotate few times before I heard a click from a toque wrench. Is it normal for it to spin like that?
IIRC, the torque value of the nut is 30 ft-lbs. So no, it’s not going to spin.
What I think often happens (a guess) is that people tighten them w/the car lifted. Then they drop the car and do not re-do it, leaving it loose. It needs to be torqued with the suspension weighted. If it is loose, it can cause slamming against the mount and an intermittent pounding sound. I don’t know what sound you hear but it could be.
Also, btw, congrats on doing this job; especially as a “first timer” - it’s not particularly easy and I hope you feel satisfied w/yourself for attacking it. Good effort/spirit/etc.
@Oro Hi Oro. When you said 30 ft/lb , i think you mention 3 nut of the strut, am I correct. The one I mentioned is the center one (the one connect to the strut shaft), which is 59ft/lb. I know there is a bearing underneath, so maybe it spin.
The other side only move a little before torque wrench click. That made me confused

yes, the center strut bolt should not spin/move easily. The roller bearing assembly allows the front suspension to turn for steering; but the shock should not spin on its own and should be torqued to 60ft lbs (not 30 as I guessed) if that is what the value is.
@Oro thann you for quick reply. So do you think what is the problem for it move like that?
It is not tightened. There is a flat milled into the end of the shock thread typically. You grasp that and hold it while torqueing. Does your shock have that milled flat in the end?
ETA: Below is a pic of a front strut in a GS. If you blow it up/look carefully, you can see the flat area milled into the end (there’s a blob of rust on it) of the threaded end. Sometimes the weight of the car will allow you to get the nut tight without holding it, but not always. You grasp that with another wrench while tightening the nut.
Hi @Oro Thank you so much for taking your time to show me. I've been busy with school so cant reply. I solved one of the problem. The noise I heard when backing into parking lot was a shim on brake pads that came loose. I thought i fixed the problem. Everything okay until this morning. I make a Uturn and the noise come back. It happen when I brake two. The noise like two metal bang against each other. It drives me crazy. Anyway, thank you so much
