New to Site - 2001 ES300 - Change out Radio & add rear view camera.
Fellow Members,
I just acquired a 2001 ES300 and would like to change out the radio as well as install a rearview camera.
In searching online, I found this website and became a member.
My first post here.
Have any of you ever changed out a radio in a Lexus yourself?
I did once in an 86' Chevy Scottsdale Truck but that was 20 years ago.
Attached is a photo of the radio in the car.
I would like to update to a touch screen radio with bluetooth capability as well as integrate a rear view camera.
Is there specific links on this that you would recommend?

Driver School Candidate
You will need some basic hand tools
*Phillips head screw driver
*Ratchet and rockets for disconnecting battery terminals along with the bolts holding in the factory radio.
*Some relatively cheap trim panel removal tools (check harbor freight)
*Wire strippers
-I would recommend soldering your adapter harness and radio harness, but crimp butt connectors will work just fine here. Never use the kind with the hard vinyl plastic. Either purchase bare uninsulated ones and use heat shrink over them or just purchase heat shrink butt connectors
*So in the case of crimping, Im a bit of a crimper snob and don’t want to run you off with some high dollar ones but you can get a pair of ratcheting crimpers for around $40 that will get the job done here, it’s just a radio install and not a fuel injector connector repair.
*Roll of some quality tape
*Dash kit for your double din radio
*May need some ground loop isolaters if you are planning to retain the factory amp and speakers. I had a bad humming noise I ended up just not wanting to track down when I installed a radio into my car because I wanted to retain the factory amp.
*Adapter harness
Are you referring to a back up camera for the rear? Here a drill and some various sized drill bits may be needed along with zip ties and even some plastic wire loom to keep things neat and fairly factory looking when running wires to trunk lid.

Ground loop isolators- if you end up having any buzzing/humming noise issues
Dash kit
Heat shrink crimp terminals- radio wiring you would use 18-22ga red colored ones
Crimpers, the jaws on these are designed and meant for heat shrink terminals only.

Hands down, Tesa tape is some of the best. And it’s what most vehicle manufacturers use on their cars.

I did this back in July 2010. I installed a Pioneer Avic X710BT which at the time was fairly cutting edge - phone bluetooth, SD card video, backup cam, navigation, good audio interface etc. Today it's totally obsolete, but it's served me well for almost 8yrs and I still use it. The backup cam was the most time consuming to install because it requires running the video feed underneath the carpet, underneath the back seats, along the trunk and mount in a suitable location. The X920BT that I installed a few months later in my Cadillac was much better - bigger screen, more RAM so faster response times with less lag when using navigation while playing from the SD card, better navigation interface, and bluetooth audio. Of course it cost a lot more too ($900 IIRC.) That too is probably pretty obsolete now, but I still regularly use it too.
Pretty sure I had a thread about my install years back...
EDIT: Yep here's the thread. The photos are gone but I can snap new ones of how it looks. Oh and I had a craftsman make me a wood dash trim piece to surround the headunit.
