Default Replaced CAT and Charcoal Cannister, CEL back on

Here is my issue with 99 Lexus ES300.

Changed OCV - bank 1 - Dec 2012
Changed OCV - bank 2 - in 2011

CEL (code 0420) always came back on (and stayed on) within 1-2 days. Prior to this, changed spark plugs, coils, knock sensors.

March, 2013 - CEL blinking. Codes P0300, 0303, 0304, 0420, 0441, 0446, P1300.

Diagnosed. Ignition coil replaced. CEl came back on 2 days later, but not blinking.

Recently took it to get codes read, since I'm exhausted with this code. Now reading suggests CAT (bank 1) and charcoal cannisters. (0420 and 0446 showed up; O2 sensors look fine, according to mechanic and were replaced in 2012).

So I replaced CAT (from dealership-388.00) and Cannister.

4 days later, CEL back on. Mechanic thinks other 2 cats could need replacing.

What is wrong with this car? I have 185k miles, purchased car from Lexus at 35k miles, had CEL come on 2-3 months after purchase in 2002, and have ALWAYS had a CEL problem.

What could be wrong now?

The problem with replacing parts strictly based on codes, is that sometimes it solve the problem and sometimes it doesn't. The purpose of a oode is to point you to the systemf where the problem may be,, not necessarily to an actual defective component.

What's needed is a mechanic that is knowledgable in performing detailed diagnostic work, measuring voltages, signals, etc., etc, and not just blindly readin codes, and replacing components.

It sounds to me that you have been dealing with mechanics that are not qualified in this area, or ones, that are just too lazy to perform proper diagnostic work.

Stop changing parts, and find a qualified mechanic with the proper diagnostic tools. Something else to consider is that sometimes aftermarket parts will not solve your problem. In most instances it's best to buy OE parts.

I'm also curious how you got an original CAT from Lexus for $388.00

Another thing to consider when replacing parts is using toyota branded parts. Electrical and gasket stuff i strivtly only use toyota.

I can assure you that replacing the downstream O2 sensor will solve your PO420 code.
