The symptoms might be pointing to a defective TPS throttle position sensor. The only way the computer knows you are pressing the gas peddle and opening the throttle plate is through the TPS. A sketchy TPS will usually cause flat spots while accelerating etc. They can be tested with a scan tool (key on, engine off) or a digital multimeter. If yours turns out defective, you should stick with a denso brand replacement.

For my 98es300 it was a defective air fuel ratio sensor. Is your check engine light on by any chance?

The saying goes "Where there is smoke, there is fire". If anything else besides a trace of oil on the exhaust is burning, the smoke needs to be identified. Did the smoke have an odor like burning oil, or an electrical smell?
Some professional scan tools have a function that reads "Mode 6" data from the vehicle PCM. Mode 6 is information the PCM stores in hexadecimal code on components that either fall within manufacturer specifications, or are progressively starting to fail and ultimately cause a check engine light. Find a mechanic that is fluent in mode 6 data usage and see if they can pinpoint the problem for you. You can purchase a professional scan too with this feature for around $250.00 or more, but there is a moderately long learning curve to using one. Manufacturers do not easily give out information on mode 6, because that is how they make money.

Turns out it was my Oil Valve Control and VT sensor that were out, Mechanic even changed the Spark Plugs for Good measure for no extra Charge.

System too lean doesn't necessarily mean that the O2 sensor is bad, but instead may mean that the system is actually too lean (too much air). I would try cleaning the MAF Sensor.

Bank 1 sensor 1 is the O2 sensor between the engine and the firewall. Sounds like you replaced the wrong sensor.

For what you would pay at Auto Zone for one sensor, you could go to RockAuto.com, or Amazon.com and get both bank one and bank 2 o2 sensors. If one is failing, the other one is probably not far behind. Purchase Denso sensors with the connector already attached.
