Default Red dots on the Navi system

I have over 5K on my CT and just recently noticed red dots along the roads on the Navi system. They are inconsistently spaced, so I don't think they are mile markers. Anyone know what they are? I don't remember seeing them during my early days of ownership.
I'll try to post a pic to show what I mean...

It traces the route that you have been traveling and shows it with dots.

The NAV systems in my cars are much older than yours, but, when I have entered a destination, the system puts a red dot at each place where the system will speak up and give directions, even if that direction is to stay on the current road and not turn off (usually at a major intersection). It took me a while to figure out what these were; I'm still not sure as to why they are shown.

I call that feature "bread crumbs" so you can tell where you've been. If you want to figure out how to get out of a neighborhood you visited for the first time, it's helpful to see how you got in there in the first place.

Hey Ed with Woodfield Lexus,
To turn it off, on he map screen click on the on soft tab button at the bottom of the screen, select "map" and then select "route trace" and turn off the feature. The system will ask you "do you want to delete all previous traced routes" select yes to get all the red dots off.

That easy!
