I think it's aerodynamics vs. rear visibility trade-off when one is designing a hatchback car. Small and narrow rear section gives you lower drag coefficient. Other nasty thing about it is that rear window is always dirty :/

 

Rear has great visibility for today's cars.......excellent mirrors too. I usually worry about what is in front of me I find that more helpful.
