Default New 2014 CT owner, which years to avoid?

I just purchased a 2014 CT200H from CarMax with 76k miles. It is supposed to be here this coming Friday 2/21. I did some research and came across the head gasket/EGR issues and found some videos/threads that said to buy 2014-2017 to avoid those issues.

Now, having read through threads here, it seems like I should have purchased a 2015-2017?
I don't mind DIY and actually enjoy wrenching on cars. I had a 2002 Prius years ago and replaced the Hybrid battery in that car. So if I need to remove and clean or replace the EGR components that won't be a problem.

Now I'm just wishing I would have bought a newer model. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Love the looks of the CT200H and the efficiency and was hoping to keep it to 200k. I'm religious about oil changes in my cars. I have access to a shop so its convenient for me to change the oil myself.

Any advice is appreciated.

John

@justicepoo — Doesn’t CarMax have a 10 or more days buyback guarantee, return or something like that?

Once you determine / confirm the car has the issue you’re concerned about, that would be your reason to return it.

No sense having to deal with any DIY issues if you can get a newer MY without them.

Yes, this one has low mileage but if you’re patient, you’ll find another that’s equal or better and will save you your time/effort not having to deal with said issues.

Or better yet — don’t you have 24-48 hrs to back out of this deal — hopefully, it’s not shipped yet…

Yeah, I think they have a 10 day return policy. I would just have to figure out what to do with financing. I already got a loan from Navy Federal Credit union. I would just lose my $649 transfer fee that I paid.

Really, there is never any guarantee that ANY of the years will have a headgasket failure or not. Newer years still have the failures, older years are still running without any failure. Or, it's a timebomb regardless. In other words, I would not worry about it. Keep the 14 you've bought, be happy with it, and do the work needed to keep it running as long as you want!

Yeah, originally I thought about how problems only show up on the forums and not trouble free experiences. The head gasket/EGR seems so common. I think I will just keep this one, maintain it well, and keep an eye on it. I may go ahead and do the EGR/Intake cleaning as preventative maintenance .

Darn it if Navy Fed is closed tomorrow so you could try and find out if there was some way to not lose the transfer fee.

Looks like you’re already leaning towards what @TobiasSing has to say and I don’t know about all the MYs possibly having this issue, but I was looking for a 2017 CT for my daughter.

Ultimately, it’s up to you whether you want to go forth with this sale or pursue a different route — Good Luck!! — keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Yes, that's a very wise observation. People generally only complain. All the success stories go untold...

The head gasket /EGR is really the ONLY problem this car has, other than the inevitable hybrid battery replacement and some brake booster issues. The rest of the car is flawless. So while the head gasket is a big deal, it's not that hard to do or maintain with the EGR cleaning. Doing the preventative maintenance is a great idea, and you'll be good if it's not too late!

Can't go wrong with a 2017. I got a 2016 to be on the safe side, plus newer and fewer miles.

2015+ also got upgraded piston rings to help mitigate oil consumption in higher mileage. Be good about your oil changes.

I have the 2012 and did the EGR/manifold clean at 70k, which seemed like it needed it. Completely clean and probably will reclean at another 50k. Maybe get the latest manifold version, might make a difference with less built up? Not sure. Regular oil changes and the cleaning and you should be golden for that 200k goal.

I think that is probably my best bet. Price wise, this one is a few thousand cheaper than a comparable condition and mileage 2016/2017. I think I'll stick with it, change to the latest version of the intake manifold, and do a preventative maintenance EGR cleaning.

The manifold does not prevent build-up. It has larger passages to allow EGR gases to flow into the cylinders, such that build-up takes longer to affect performance of the engine. Note, you'll also need a new flash of software to make the new manifold work. If you clean the EGR ports in the intake when you clean everything else, you'll have no issues.

Ok, so I decided to get a loan through Navy Federal to get a better interest rate, and along with that Navy Federal sent me a carfax on the 2014 and it showed 2 wrecks that were not reported on CarMax's autocheck history. Soooo, I decided to go a different direction. I found a 2016 CT200H F-Sport in white with 73k miles and a really good maintenance history (11 oil changes documented) in the DFW area about 350 miles from me. I drove down last night and picked it up this morning and drove it home.

Awesome!! So glad you found out about the wrecks — that is so shady CarMax not revealing 2 WRECKS — WTH?!

So in the end, you got a newer, better, well maintained CT — WooHoo for you 🙌

I hope it wasn’t too much more than what you were planning to spend, but it looks worth it — Sweet ride indeed 👍

P.S. Also hope you didn’t lose the $649 transfer fee…

I was able to get a really good deal and only paid $1500 more for the 2016 F-Sport. And, a white 2016/2017 F-Sport is what I wanted in the first place, so it all worked out well. Love the car, can't wait to learn more about it. It's been a long time since I had a hybrid (previously had a 2002 Prius and 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid).

Oh man, ONLY $1500 more for a 2-year newer CT F Sport, in the color you always wanted — SCORE‼️

That’s a great deal — CONGRATS and enjoy getting to know it…
