Let's just say you don't want to run winter tires where you live. From my understanding, the compound used in winter tires resists getting hard in the colder climates. The problem with AS and summer tires is the rubber gets hard when the temps drop below freezing so they can't grip properly

Its the rubber compounds. In order for them to stay soft when its really cold, they are so soft when its warm that they fall apart. Its the same reason why Summer tires are rock hard when its cold, they are designed for use at high temps. Allseason tires try and be in a range where they work in a more varied climate. Allseason tires though have very little traction when temps get down to 25 degrees or below...

OP lives in Western Washington (where I am). Temps here don't really justify a winter tire. All seasons are typically fine. We get an occasional snow or ice event, but we are most often in the 40s in winter. Today it is 50 degrees.

They have very inferior grip and wear in warmer climates, not exactly unsafe but just not a good idea.

i'd say the avalon is like 95% of the luxuriousness of an LS... if all you do is putter around in a sensible, fuel efficient manner

for the majority of people the avalon is a much better choice in basically every single way, but i just can't not have that rock solid triple digit speed stability and all the V8ness lol

glad to hear things worked out, and i'd also agree that's the best avalon gen

Eh. No, it's not close at all. Even a newer one (I just worked on one) is cheap and tinny feeling with way lower end materials etc...the ES is above it after all. The LS is not in the conversation

well to us it’s not close since we’re really paying attention to things, but for the average person with average driving habits i don’t think it’s immediately obvious why one costs twice as much as the other

That's fair to a point, my only counter would be that every single person I've let drive an LS or A8 KNEW it was seriously high end and the nicest thing they have ever driven even if they didn't know what brand the cars were.

My uncle always drove Avalons, he must have had 6 of them. He always lusted after my dads and my LS’s. He just could never bring himself to buy one (he is incredibly cheap)

The Avalon is very hard to beat dollar for dollar for sure.

I think the ES is better value compared to the Avalon. Quieter and better interior material.

If they are basically the same car I like the ES better too, only cuz the Lexus interior is nicer.

In 2007 the ES was a lot smaller than the Avalon...so not a realistic comparison. ES didnt become the same size as the Avalon until 2013.
