Good news for Polestar and other non Tesla EV drivers. Electrify America is installing their new Super Chargers in heavily travelled areas. This is a stop I use in Bakersfield, CA (my last charging stop) before heading into SoCal



The new chargers now have spring loaded charging cables so that I don't have to back in. I do understand that the new chargers are having issues in areas with sub freezing temps. I have no idea what sub freezing temps are, so I'll let others worry about that

 

Big update for 2024.

Moves to RWD, bigger battery, more power, faster charging, and new motors. The RWD now gets to the magic 300-mile EPA rating.

I really like the redesign and upgrades, and with the motor being able to disconnect really adds to more efficiency, but if they are going to complete with the Model 3, they are going to need to drop that price

 

LOL, that's one thing that makes EV platforms really cool. The ability to change from FWD to RWD for a simple model year changeover is unheard of! Super cool and I hope going EV means more RWD platforms on the market to choose from.

 

I'm thinking that FWD will go away forever with EV platforms, with RWD and AWD being the only options. Plus any grill style you want..including no grill! But get in one, put your foot down and you will find that's not the only thing cool about them...

BTW the power upgrade had to be approved by the NTSB here in the states, which is why it took a year to be allowed to sold here

 

Today I went with our facilities manager to look at a building our company will be leasing to expand our manufacturing. It's near the Tesla Fremont factory. The Facilities Manager has a Porsche 911, but he wanted me drive as he was curious about my Polestar. As we are driving, he asks me is it fast? So instead of answering him in words, I show him by putting my foot to the floor. The only way to describe the look on his face is hilarious He then uttered something to the effect of "Oh s h i t, that blinded me for a second!" He was sort of in shock, and kept bracing himself for me to do it again, but I told him it's OK, I won't do it again LOL!

The memory of this day will always be with me

 

Yesterday my wife and I were invited to a friends house in Manteca, CA which is in the California central valley, roughly about 70 miles from our house. From there later that evening we drove to Tracy, a nearby city maybe 15 miles to pay a visit to my wife's cousin who was in a car accident. The drive to Manteca is by a winding hwy 680 with a lot of inclines through the hills, than hwy 580 with a lot inclines and eventually hwy 5. The weather was pretty bad with rain, gusty winds, and temps in the 40's, so there was heavy use of the heater and defroster. Average speeds were about 80 mph, slowing down to 70 mph in heavy downpours and wet and slippery conditions. Total round trip was 160 miles. I started the trip with a 90 percent state of charge, and returned with 19 percent state of charge. I had roughly 40 miles left on the battery. I burned a total of 59 kWh electricity.

The EPA rating of my Polestar is 250 miles. Based on the current conditions of cold weather, rain, bad road conditions and heater use (as well as lots of uphill driving at high speeds), at 100 percent charge in the winter my Polestar does roughly 220 to 225 miles. So it looks like in the winter I lose about 30 miles of range. I used about roughly less than 2 gallons of gas equivalent (a gallon of gas contains 33.7 kWh energy) for the whole trip. Not too bad!

 

great info. however, i don't even like to return home with 40mi. of range in a gas car, so for your day's 160mi. trip, i'd want to have at least 250 easily achievable miles range no matter the conditions.

 

The reason I don't care is because the moment I got home I plugged into my charger and the next morning I was full again. Plus there were numerous super chargers on my way home that I could access if I felt uncomfortable. But GPS predicted perfectly at every point what SoC I would be at every point of my trip. So for me taking gasoline cars on trips is a waste of money
