2023 Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance
What's the weight on this car though? Over 1,000 pound-feet of torque yet it's barely faster than an S8 with almost half the torque and a third less HP.
It makes total sense since EV motors do not have ability to simply lay on more boost as RPMs increase. They make max TQ possible at idle and it only drops from there vs how Audi sets up their engines to compensate for rpm increase by just laying in more boost as ignition events speed up/have less of a physical window to detonate. The TQ curve is simply larger since it doesn't fall off till way latter in the 0-60 acceleration unlike a motor that falls off instantly.
If you have ever tuned an FI engine you would be well aware of this. If you have enough precision in injection timing you can create a boost curve that keeps actual wheel TQ extremely high at all RPMs provided the turbos are large enough and you have intercooler capacity. The EA825s most major improvement over the EA824 is it's far far far high capacity charge cooler system allowing a even more aggressive boost profile to keep TQ maxed out.
Add on the fact that Mercedes and AMG transmissions have been known for the last 10 years to be slow, limit TQ output, and not transmit as much though as a ZF8 and this make total sense. Oh and electric motor systems can't sustain output for very long, I doubt the system is still outputing max power past a single 0-60 run, it won't be helping much over 150mph since the raw engine output is lower than the EA825
