Yeah it's really bad at the beginning. I always got that look from my "passenger" when I came to a complete stop. I even used the trick to apply brake approaching to a stop, let go the foot to not completely stop then stop. Still very zappy. It got better after a year but yeah it's still there. If one is an aggressive driver, it should be fine. But when you have someone to "chauffeur", it's a different story.
I can start to hear the engine noise when it hits around 2K. For a reference it's at less than 2k cruising at 75. I drove a new LS a few years back so I can't remember to comment. But LS and A8 are not performance oriented though. So I wouldn't be surprised if the noise is low. RR is what? 100k? Haven't driven it either so can't comment. In any case, I would think a car person would want to hear engine noise when accelerating. No?
It sounds like a good solution but... he wants a new car. So maybe trade it in for a new same model?
RR starts at around 300k lol!
I like the engine to be silent under 3k so if I'm not really accelerating I don't hear it, however I do want it to start to get loud past that and over 5k a scream/roar is nice since at that point it's going to redline anyway!
How much throttle you giving it? My LSs are silent under 3k and the A8 is close.....a RR is totally silent under 3k, literally nothing
Disagree on that, I can definitely hear my husband's Range Rover's engine around town under 3k. It's not loud like my G63 but it does have that classic muted rumble.

I am considering the Alfa Stelvio Quadrfoglio which is similar size but looks MUCH better. Have appt to test drive one next week. Its probably one of the best designed performance SUVs.
I absolutely love driving these! The Stelvio oozes with personality and now they've corrected the big reliability issues from earlier model years. They are very expensive to service though and the dealer network is spotty at best, so as long you're feeling secure about your local Alfa dealer it's definitely worth a drive. The suspension is not soft so that's something to keep in mind as well, although it's better than the X3 M which is granitic.
Whatever you do, buy your new car fast, or just buy out the X3. The prices are about to go up again substantially, this week I've got letters from two major raw material suppliers announcing price increases of 20-40%, this is on top of the prices that have already doubled since the pandemic, so essentially most raw materials have tripled since.

He meant Rolls Royce. Lol. And we are talking about accelerating not cruising. To think of it... why would one (car person) not want to hear engine noise when accelerating from a stop? I'm not even enthusiastic but *** yeah that noise is good once in awhile.
