I wish it really did use the premium GA-L RWD-based platform of the JDM Crown/5LS/LC coupe, rather than the GA-K FWD-based platform of the Camry/Highlander.

all i've read is toyota has trademarked the crown name in the u.s. and there's no other info about what their plans are.

i'd say chances of current japanese crown sedan coming to u.s. are very low.

A couple years ago, there was a very valid rumor from a Japanese newspaper close to Toyota's HQ that reported that the Crown sedan would get axed in favor of a crossover for 2022. They also claimed that the nameplate would come to the U.S. market. And now with the official confirmation of the Crown heading to the U.S. market this year, we're finally starting to see this rumor come to fruition.

This would be a miserable sales flop in the United States. No wonder they don't sell it

I think people really have to stop reading into Toyota trademarks filings. reading into these patents are a very easy way to create false rumours.

Past trademarks:

TX350
TX500h
Celica
Ozoeater
Harrier
LM300h
LM350
Celica (again in 2017)
TJ Cruiser
860 SPECIAL EDITION

If it's the real Crown (a.k.a. Lexus GS with a better interior), excellent. If not - another one down the bin.

huh?

The Crown has been the RWD flagship Toyota sedan for a long time. It is basically a Toyota LS, the ES has nothing on it. It costs more than an ES.

Top of the range Crown uses the same 3.5L 4-stage Hybrid as the LS500h and LC500h.

It’s RWD. Basically a Lexus LS at a more affordable price. Still more expensive than a Lexus ES.

Not anymore. See a couple posts above. The big rumor that's all-but-confirmed at this point is that the Crown sedan has been killed in favor of a Highlander-based crossover using its name that will be brought over to the U.S. this year.

Yeah, the Crown. Starts at $45,000US in Japan. Four banger from 1st Gen NX and same hybrid base motor from the Sienna. Nobody in the States will care if Toyota brings this stateside. The Crown even used to be built in China for that market. People only want to talk about it because it’s rwd.

I think Toyota would be smart to morph the car into a sleek premium rwd crossover.

Too many assumptions being made. Toyota won’t bring something that is non competitive. The only thing stopping the top spec Crown is Lexus because it would compete with the ES as a better value car.

The 2019 Crown 3.5L G is higher spec than any sedan Toyota ever had in the US. Higher spec than the outgoing Lexus GS. I have driven a 2019 one, apart from the odd shape, I would have taken it over the GS.

Do agree the older Crown was pointless, but the current generation is a huge step up.

In your opinion, what would be the reason for bringing a Crown sedan to America?

Fuel efficient reliable and refined performance RWD luxury sedan that competes with Infiniti and Genesis RWD sedans.

Only the new 3.5L hybrid though. Other drivetrains are meh.

Same drivetrain as the LS500h at a bargain price but faster as it weights less.

It's a FWD-based Toyota Crown Kluger [nee Toyota Highlander in US market].

we have no way of knowing if that's what this trademark filing refers to (a highlander!)
