Here is the most complete Chinese-sourced video I've seen yet on the upcoming next-generation GEM (Global-Emerging-Market)-Platform Buick Encore. This is NOT the Buick Encore GX that I have (that confuses a lot of people).....it is a separate platform, despite its roughly similar size and style. This GEM-Encore, which replaces Buick's current First-Generaion Encore which has been sold since 2013, has been on sale in China now for a little while (maybe a year or so?)....while the current aging Encore is still on sale in the U.S.

GM, officially, has been mum (too mum, IMO) about whether we are going to see the next Encore here in the U.S. alongside the Encore GX. There were a number of rumors........all worthless The present one was going to be dropped in the American market for 2022....but it's still in the Buick line-up. The new Encore was supposed to come to the U.S. in 2022.....that obviously hasn't happened. The current Encore will be dropped in 2023 (???....we'll see) The current Encore will run through the end of the 2023 model year (???....we'll see.)

Even if it does come to the American market, just from what I saw in the video....No Thanks, I'll either keep what I got (my 12-month ownership review of it is coming up) or exchange it for a hybrid GX in a few years if they become available. I'm not impressed with the dash, interior, wheels, general trim level, and several other features of the new Encore. IMO it looks cheap and built to a budget....more or less like a base-level Ford Escape. The most glaring mistake was, IMO, was using a tacked-on video-screen above the center of the dash instead of the nicely-integrated unit on all other Buicks (and most other GM products). That smacks of cost-cutting. Yes, I'll admit that Lincoln, a luxury/upscale brand, also does the same thing with their recent video screens, but Lincoln uses much better materials inside their interiors than Ford, and their screens have a solid quality feel.

Of course, some of this cost-cutting can be overlooked if GM cuts the base price to match......Ford, for example, managed to price the base Maverick at $19,995, and Mavericks, even if they are not base models, are going out the door faster than they can be ordered or produced.

This video has some loud and (IMO) annoying music.....I recommending muting it.

Yes, the Second-Generation Envision looks much nicer inside, but will likely cost a lot more, and the Envision made the (IMO) mistake of dumping the fore/aft shift-lever for the push/pull transmission buttons.

 

The fore/aft shifter look cheap and dated the button looks lame. They used them in the 1980s and they are back, Toyota has them now on the new TNGA products, the new shifters are one of the worst things about modern Toyotas. The new LX600 shifter looks out of place on such an expensive vehicle

 

Makes no sense to sell both of these vehicles...

 

Well, that's what Buick marketing is doing, right now, in China, as we speak.

Sometimes auto companies, for various reasons, do end up selling two overlapping products under the same brand name. We saw that in the 60s with the Chevy Corvair and Nova (compact sedan/coupe/wagon), in the early 90s with the Mazda 929 and Millennia (large sedan), and today with the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus (mid-sided SUV)....there are many more examples as well.

Thanks for posting, Jill...but keep in mind that this is NOT the Second-Generation Encore, which is done on the GEM platform and is currently for China-only...the Encore will be dropped in the U.S. What you posted here is the Second-Generation Encore GX, which is a different platform, shared with the Chevy Trailblazer. There is also, of course, the Buick Envista, a still-different platform, which was originally to be China-only, but which GM management has also decided to bring to the U.S. And, of course, the Buick Electra E5, a BEV that, again, was going to be China-only, and now also scheduled for the U.S.


Confused? I won't blame you if you are. I would be, too, if I wasn't enough of a Buick fan to try and keep up with all of them.

Right off hand, I'll say that I don't care for the new front end, which IMO looks too much like an insect, or the new dash, which has a cheaper look than the 2020-2023 version I have. The new logo design is OK (I've seen worse)...but I probably will also miss the traditional tri-shield in the circle, along with the Buick fender-portholes. That former all-chrome-outline tri-shield, though, which Buick used in the U.S. for several years was terrible...my Verano had it, and the Lacrosse had it in the middle of the steering wheel.

Saw a newer Buick Encore yesterday parked a few spots over.

Not the newest model like featured above but have to say it has the looks and also appears to be same or maybe a little larger sized when looking at my car RX330 near it for comparison.

I AM in a bigger Encore...the Encore GX. I have had one for two years now....a new 2021 model....although the GX is a different vehicle and platform from the smaller Encore. I'm getting ready to do a two-year Owner-Update in it.
